If you missed it last week, better put a pointer on the dial tonight, because you'll really get a kick out of this little psychological drama. A marshal is murdered and a web of circumstantial evidence closes in on young Pete Lacey. Pete is innocent . . as the Lone Ranger knows, and you'll see how circumstantial evidence is beaten down . . on the Lone Ranger program tonight at 7 o'clock. Who was the strange appari tion in our studios on Monday night. Any resemblance of this character to any other charac ters we known is strictly in tentional. Ah, what a flash bulb will do. "Take to the Air," will be back at its regular time tomor row at 9:15 p. m. Immediately after the "Linger Awhile" show . . at 9 o'clock. If the first item in this column didn't make sense, plase don't blame us. It didn't make much sense to us, either. Former Representative Passes at Wallowa Wallowa, Ore., June 28 U.R) C. A. Hunter. 73, former state representative and ex-mayor of Wallowa, died last night while on the annual spring cattle drive in the north woods of Wallowa county. Hunter was widely known as one of the leading cattle raisers in the Wallowa area. Consumers Drawing Margarine Dividends Washington, June 28 U.R) Many consumers already are drawing dividends from a tax repeal which hasn't even gone into effect yet. They now can buy yellow margarine 10 cents a pound cheaper, although the 10-cent federal tax won't be repealed until 12:01 a. m. Saturday. Sharp competition forced many margarine makers to low er prices prematurely. One of the leading manufacturers jump ed the gun by cutting prices more than a week ago. Many others followed suit. For years the consumer has had to pay the 10-cent tax on manufactures in form of higher prices. Temporarily, many man ufacturers now are paying out of their own pocket. No 'Step-Up' Noted In Atomic Operations Los Alamos, N. M., June 28 (U.R) Atomic commission offic ials said today that "No step-up" in operations here had resulted from the Korean war, but point ed out that the laboratories had been on an extended work week since March 18. One official said some labora tories at this key nuclear re search installation had been on a six-day week since March, while others were working five and a half. Night shifts have been In operation regularly. BARTLETT Your Health and Its Care B OR. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Reidert should address inquiries tot Dr. William Steely. 261 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Call. Wednesday. June 11. 1950 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN VITE REQUIRES VITAMINS HEART ATTACK OR INDIGESTION? THANK HEAVENS I Most ittscki are just aetd Induce! Hon. Whin It strikes, tike Btll-ans laoieii. Tney com hid tne lasiesi-acunt median! knovn to doctors for the relief of heartburn, fu and similar duties. 35, Dr. brady A reader sends the label from a package of expensive hokum. According to the label the nos trum contains whopping por tions of every vitamin I ever hear of and al so severall have not yet heard about, not to mention a dozen or more min erals . . . T o b e sure, numerous fac tors or com ponents of the B complex invariably occur in combination, for instance in wheat, liver, ham, alfalfa, dried beans. That scarcely warrants the practice of combining all vitamins in one shot. An adequate daily ration or supply of vitamins is as neces sary for health, vite, functional efficiency as is food and water. One can live longer without food than without water, and without vitamins andor miner als, than without food, but one can't live indefinitely without vitamins and minerals nor can one enjoy good functional effi ciency, good health, vite vite if one's daily ration of vitamins is deficient for an extended period throughout childhood and youth, for example. I must keep reminding you credulous customers that vita mins are not magic, not medicine at all, but just accessory nutri tional factors. With rare excep tions no effects can be noticed or expected from taking vita mins until the daily ration has been taken without interruption for two or three months. It is absurd to imagine a "shot" or "dose" of vitamins can produce or restore "pep" in the course of a few hours or days. Try to get it through your head that any symptoms due to need of this or that vitamin have inevitably developed in consequence of prolonged deficiency in the daily intake of the vitamin in the diet and the gradual degeneration of cells, tissues or organs. This de generation is known as nutri tional deficiency disease. Some of the functioning cells are re placed by inert fatty or scar tissue instead of new functioning cells. If the degenerative pro cess can be reversed or even arrested ..it will certainly take many months of supplemental vitamin feeding to achieve it. So you had better have some understanding of what you' hope to do with vitamins if you take them at all. Don't expect im mediate effects, as you might from medicine. First be sure which vitamin or vitamins you need, and then take an adequate daily ration of it for at least three months if at all. In the pamphlet Young Folks and Old Folks (send stamped self addressed envelope for it) I give my belief about the nutritional deficiency of most Americans, young and old, who live on re fined food. To supplement my own everyday food I eat at lunch a suitable ration of the three vitamins and three miner als which are lacking in our modern refined food namely, thiamine (Bl), riboflavin and D: calcium, phosphorus and iodine. Just enough of each to keep my daily intake adequate for good nutrition, I think. From time to time some old timer, irked by the popular abuse of vitamins, asserts that a balanced diet, whatever that may mean, will provide all the vitamins one needs. But rarely does such a doctor or health authority specify which foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner will provide the needed vitamins. The corrective, protective or basic health diet outlined in The 7 Keys to Vite (for this booklet send twenty-five cents and stamped self-addressed envelope) includes the best food sources of minerals and vitamins milk, eggs, fresh fruit, leafy vege tables, fresh greens, cheese, nuts. People with enough brains and gumption to surmount the popular obsession against it may greatly improve their ordinary diet by substituting plain wheat for part of the white flour in bread and other items. On writ ten request, accompanied with stamped self-addressed envelope, I'll send a pamphlet titled Wheat to Eat which suggests various ways of using plain wheat in the family diet. QUESTIONS t! ANSWERS Tony's Tall Sllll Wais No. No. Not a pill the thing you might have given your beloved Tony the Wirish Terror an hour before you took him to the veterinary for execu tion, but some of the same medicine you have suggested that the physi cian or dentist give a patient who has excessive dread of dental treatment. M. C.I Answer- Thank you. But. after all. Tony hardly suspected why I was handing him over to the kindly veter inary not till the very last moment, when he faltered just a bit with that wag. 1 still think the veterinary's opinion was a wise one that In in jection of strychnine Into the heart Is the most merciful way to execute an animal. Glandular Deficiency Could thyroid deficiency keep a woman from having children? iMrs. H. S ) Answer Yes. Husband Deserves Paddling Our five motitns old son has crying spells like any other baby, especially whtn we put him to bed My husband says 1 spoil him. and what he deserves is a good paddling. iT. J. M l Answer Mavhe he does Any one who would whip or otherwise punish an infant deserves more than a good paddling he deserves to have his teeth kicked out. The baby probably cries for a little love and mothering, a lullaby and nursing or at least his botUe to comfort him at bedtime. (Copyright 1950 by John F. Dille Co.) Use Mall Tribune Want Ads MOVING?
