Newspaper Page TextTEN MEDfOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, Jun. it, 1950 Benefit Claims For 1950-51 Now Being Received Salem, Ore., June 28 (U.R) New claims for the 1050-51 benefit year will be received this week, the state unemploy ment compensation commission said today. They will be received at the commission's 26 local offices. The commission said those now unemployed may serve their required waiting week be fore the benefit year opens with the week of July 2-8. The old benefit year ends Friday, June 30. New Claims Filed Insured claimants who have been drawing 1949-30 benefits throughout June were allowed to file their new claims last week. But their first compen sable week in the new year will be July 2-8. Only 4,493 new claims were received as against 6,234 a year ago. Because of the more than 31, 000 claimants who exhausted their 1949-50 benefits by mid June, the number filing this week may be somewhat more than the 5,711 of last year, the commission noted. Unemployment payments this month are running considerably under comparable weeks of 1949. During the year just draw ing to a close, however, those covered under state law have received nearly $26 million com pared with $13 million in the 1948-49 benefit year. Donna Clark is quitting the club as her steer is too big. She is going to take some other project in 4-H this year. A new girl in the Beef club is Marron Peasley. We are going to have the next meeting at her place. Monte Axtell will make demonstration on "beef cattle" at next meeting and Douglas Chamberlain will make a dem onstration on "bloating of dairy cattle." Judging of dairy cattle at the next meeting will start at 8 o'clock and the meeting will fol low the judging. Velma Peile was acting sec retary as her sister was attend ing 4-H summer school at Cor-vallis. Charleen Peil Secretary Alaska Miners Highesf Paid on Continent Palmer, Alaska, June 28 (U.R) United Mine Workers at the Evans Jones mine were granted 10-cent hourly wage increase today and Mine Operator Harry Hill said they were the highest paid coal miners in North Amer ica. The raise boosted the miners' pay to $3.10 an hour. The firm employs 150 men. 000 have filed claims, compared with 103.000 the previous year. Festival to See Ancient Sport of Bowling on Green Ashland, June 28 "Bowling on the green," the ancient and picturesque English sport which is the forerunner of more mod ern types of bowling, will be a a feature of the Ashland Shakes pearean festival this year. Harry Rees, a native of Cardiff, Wales, and recent arrival in Ashland, has received a ship ment of bowling "woods" or balls from Stratford-on-Avon, the home of William Shakes peare. The woods are a gift to the festival association, and Rees plans to organize a club devoted to the venerable sport, and to hold competition in Llthia park during the summer. Is Champion The Welshman is recognized in England as international champion and during two years he lived in Seattle he won the Pacific northwest championship in the sport, which is highly popular there and in California. Some discussion has arisen over the possibility that a team of bowlers, in authentic Eliza bethan costumes, may engage in the sport during the festival, in addition to other attractions for visitors. The game was popular in Shakespeare's day, and among its devoted adherents were such persons as Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake, and others in the court of Queen Bess. June 28 A woman who apparently suf fered temporary amnesia yester day has been identified as Mrs. Cecil Pomiranke of Portland, the women's division of the city police department said today. The division reported that Mrs. Pomiranke apparently lost her memory because she was was to have an operation at the overcome by knowledge that she county hospital. Phu-u Northwest Rivers Continue Downward Portland, Ore., June 28 (U.R) The 1950 northwest flood situ ation, heralded only six weeks ago as serious by weather bu rcar forecasters was bright to day with forecasts of continued "moderate increases" in the rates-af-fall of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Condition of the railroad dike at Rainier, Ore., was better with the falling Columbia. If the dike had given way, a residential area would have been flooded. MSSe Alleged Garbage Law Violator in Court The first of six alleged viola tors of the laws prohibiting in discriminate dumping of debris appeared in justice court yester day to answer charges of dump ing refuse on the property of another without permission, namely in the Climax road area. Judge W. P. Tucker said this morning that Roy Hopkins has been given until July 10 to clean up the garbage he left in that area. At that time the area will be inspected to see whether the order has been complied with before the case is closed. State police filed six of the debris dumping complaints in justice court Saturday but Hop kins was the first to appear in court. There is less waste land in pro portion to total area in Illinois than in any other state. Summer School at Phoenix Under Way Phoenix, June 28 Remedial summer school classes for Phoe nix elementary grade students are being held in the schools here, according to School Super intendent E. R. James, and ar rangements have been complet ed with Southern Oregon college to conduct the classes. Students believed bv their parents to be in need of summer school work, and who have not been enrolled, may register for the classes at the Phoenix ele mentary school any morning this week, or they may call the school superintendent. The classes, which will con tinue for six weeks, started Mon day, and start at 9 a.m. each day.
