She had formerly made her home there. The couple made the trip by car. Grass Burns State forest pa trolman were called to two small grass fires yesterday. They said a fire about 5 p. m. burned three-fourths of an acre on high way 99 north of the river near Gold Hill. The other covered one-fifth of an acre on Cherry street southwest of Medford. It happened about noon. Houses Planned Antony-Mc- Intyre Builders have applied at the city building inspectors of fice to erect a $20,000 residence at 7 Windsor avenue. John J. McCann will construct a $10,000 home at 320 Grace street. A. C Van Galder asked to make a $9,000 addition at Riverside Mot ors and Implements company, 415 South Riverside avenue. B, E. Brown requested a permit to remodel a house and add a bath room at 318 Marie street. From Lot Angeles Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Cuffel, 909 North Cen tral avenue, have returned home from the Shrine convention in Los Angeles. En route they visit ed navy yards in the bay area and were accompanied from there to the convention by their son, Lawrence Cuffel, who is in the navy. Elizabethan Skit Publicizes 10th Annual Festival Ashland, June 28 One of a series of booster programs to advertise the 10th annual Shakespearean festival was pre sented last night at the Lions' club installation here. The pro gram followed a potluck dinner given in the gymnasium of Briscoe grade school. The program was a humorous Elizabethen skit complete with court jesters and musicians. "Good Queen Bess" was por trayed by Miss Clara Daniels, Medford, who will -play "Cleo patra" in this year's festival and who is director of women's pro grams for station KW1N In Ash land. Jesters were Miss Norma Jeanne Snell, Medford, who will play the part of Celia in "As You Like It." and Rudi Vest. Ash land, who will also appear in this year's festival. Musicians were Ben Trow bridge. Medford. and Lloyd Hal vorsen and Mr. and Mrs. Mau rice Bailey, Ashland. Tonight the group will travel to Yreka to stage the skit for the Yreka Kiwanis club. Miss Addis Lane of Salem, who will play Rosalind in "As You Like It" will substitute for Miss Daniels at tonight's performance. Walter Young was program chairman and in troduced the three speakers. In observance of United Na tions week, Harlan Bosworth, chairman of the club's local in ternational service committee, discussed that organization's role in the current critical Korean situation. Bosworth read the pre amble of the U. N. charter and outlined the articles coyering the military sanctions invoked against the north Koreans. The crisis in Asia today is the most critical lest of the U. N., the or ganization which offers the best means of winning eventual world peace, the speaker told Rotarians. Wedntiday. Brlggs was awarded a trophy for her special exhibition with her trained stallion, "Tezeyn," In the fourth anual Oregon all-arablan horse show held in Portland Saturday and Sunday. Miss Briggs, who received an award at last year's show for riding the stallion, was especially Invited this year to show her horse In a single act of tricks which she has trained him to do. She was a princess for the Jackson Coun ty Mounted Sheriffs' posse Roundup in Medford this year. In addition to the trophy re ceived by Miss Briggs, the Briggs family was awarded rib bons in the breeding class for their arabian mare and its foal; two awards In the performance class, and one for showing the youngest colt. County Budget Passed After Hearing Today The Jackson county budget for the fiscal vnnr 1050-51 has been passed as published, Coun ty Judge J. B. Coleman reported at noon today. A public hearing on the $1, 595.358.55 budget was adjourn ed tnts morning after about 15 taxpayers appeared to discuss It with the budget committee. Judge Coleman said they were the first taxpayers to attend a county budget hearing In the past three years. The budget calls for S541.751.35 to be raised by taxes on property. Obituary Astoria Teachers Reported in Japan Astoria, Ore., June 28 (U.R) Edwin Niska and David Shaner cabled their families here last night that they had arrived in Seoul, Korea Saturday but now were in Japan. It was presumed here that the two men, who were to teach in the Korean Institute of Technol ogy, escaped from Seoul in the airlift rescue operations. They now are on Kyushu Island, Japan. Niska is a former biologist from the Oregon fish commis sion, while Shaner is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon.
