Diseased Kidney Replaced In History-Making Surgery Chicago. June 20 (U.R) Doc tors have successfully removed a diseased kidney from an ill wom an and replaced it with a healthy one taken from a dead woman, it was disclosed today. The operation was performed on Mrs. Howard Tucker, 49, at the Little Company of Mary hos pital Saturday by Dr. Richard Lawler. Doctors said that Mrs. Tucker was "willing to gamble rather than He back and wait for death." First of Kind The healthy kidney came from an unidentified woman who T License Plates To Have Wider Usage Salem, Ore., June 20 (U.R) The letter "E" on Oregon license plates next year will have more identification, the secretary of state's office reported today. Heretofore, such automobiles bearing special exempt license f nates coulc not necessarily De dentified with any one branch of state or local government. But effective with the 1951 li cense plates, the letter "E" for exempt also will carry one of six departments: irrigation district owned, city owned, county own ed, state owned, school district owned, or publicly owned. Exempt license plates in 1951 will be permanent with the ve hicle and will cost SI, not sub ject to renewal. The office said that 20.000 automobiles come under the exempt heading. Before 1950 the "E" was bor dered with a diamond character istic. Although that border was dropped this year, the office found that citizens still were puz zled about the designation. Assessment Work on Mine Claims Extended Washington, June 20 (U.R) The house today passed a bill to extend for 90 days the July 1 deadline for performance of an nual assessment work on unpat ented mining claims in conti nental United States and Alaska. The bill now goes back to the senate which passed similar leg islation but without the proviso making the extension apply to Alaska. Present law requires that min ing claim holders do at least S100 worth of improvement work a year on their claims. For several years, the requirement has been suspended. The present bill does not suspend the requirement for this fiscal year but extends the deadline until October 1. New York, June 20 (U.R) Liberty magazine has been pur chased by Publisher A. Clotting Prevented Within a few minutes of the donor s death two teams of sur geans swung into action. One, headed by Dr. James West, re moved the healthy kidney while another with Lawler in charge removed Mrs. Tucker's diseased kidney The healthy kidney was placed in a salt solution wnicn contain' ed an agent to prevent blood clot ting and was passed to the sur geons in an adjoining room where Mrs. Tucker lay. Doctors reported that the kid ney, when transplanted to Mrs. Tucker took on a "healthy pink" color. He finds flying frequently answers the press of church business and enables him to keep appoint ments otherwise impossible be cause of the distance-time factor. The only real scare Bishop Bloy has experienced to date oc curred when another bishop fly ing with him became excited and grabbed the wheel of the plane. Bishop Bloy felt it was as close to Heaven as he wished to get for the moment and fought the con trols through a tight spiral to right the ship. Democratic Chairman To Visit in Oregon Portland, Ore., June 20 -(U.R) William W. Boyle Jr., chairman of the democratic national com mittee, will be in Oregon Satur day and Sunday for brief stops here and in The Dalles. Making the western trip with Boyle is Mrs. India Edwards, di rector of the women's division of the democratic central com mittee. She can play hairdresser! South Grants Pass Annexation Sought Grants Pass, Ore., June 20 (U.R) A petition calling for an nexation of South Grants Pass into the city was being circulated today by businessmen of the South Grants Pass area. An estimated 3,000 people re side in a mile square area im mediately south of Caveman bridge which marks the south ern boundary of the city.
