tnB MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday. Mar 1950 Pickin' Pears News, Gossip, Comment ILfe5img 1Fe From Camp white Br L. J. "Tick" Malarkay W always maka it a point to visit Legion posts. Have been a member ever sinoc Clatsop Post 12, Astoria, wai organized in September, 1919. Dropped in to take a look at Medford Post 15 and here found Buck Knight, manager. A brother Sigma Nu-er, old friend Buck told about Med ford and its people. We had a good laugh or two recalling tome of the highlights of state conven tions. Attending state Legion conventions is good work if you are young enough to miss about three night s sleep. We met a boy from Brook lyn Jim Al Cochrane, who is convalescing from an automobile accident. Cochrane was born and raised in Brooklyn and went to sea for years. Lately he has been cooking in logging camps and plans to resume his trade in the near future near Coos Bay. - Al is a Greybeard from WW One. Friend Cochrane says that the only ball club in the world ie the Brooklyn Dodgers. Chaplain Henry W. Anderson had his first Camp White birth day last Sunday. Just a year ago he took up his duties at the Center. "Sky Pilot" Anderson is both a ' Greybeard and a Kid another one of those who pitched a double header. Back in '17 he joined a combat engineer outfit in San Francisco and marched in the Big Parade across France and Belgium and into Germany. The last Big Argument found him "down under" but instead of a rifle he was toting an organ that was used for services afloat and ashore. He is a lot of fun to talk to, and be Her yet he understands veterans' problems. A real job he does out this way. SuiK'ay, Dr. and Mrs. John Hask; drove from Roseburg to J : .ford and Camp White. Whilu here they visited Dr. and Mrs. William White and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hatton. Ever since transferring from the Valley of the Umpquas to the Valley of the Rogues 4 weeks ago to day "Private M" has wanted to say something about John Haskins, M.D., VA hospital man ager at Roseburg. Something good. Because he rates it. He graduated from the Uni versity of Minnesota and to earn his medical education corre sponded for newspapers. He got All-American honors as a back on the football team, class of '15 and was an all-conference guard on the basketball squad. Clark Shaughnessy, the now famous coach, teamed with Half back Haskins. The coach was Hank Williams who really put over the much debated T forma tions. Haskins is an AU-American in . more than football. ooo This evening at 8 o'clock ' there will be a formal installa tion of a Medford chapter of the Gold Star Mothers of this com munity, in the Camp White audi torium. To this writer an occa sion of this kind is a solemn one. and yet not one of too much sadness. Because my own moth er, who is not with us anymore, wore two of the golden stars ' when the war was over in 1918. Brothers Bob and Gerald didn't make it. "Mom," brave soldier that she i was, never let down when it came to meetings like this. She i always was there, standing erect ; and proud, and through it all , nerhaos came the consolation tor i our great loss in France. Folks were assembled to pay ner, ana thousands like her, the greatest tribute that any mother, could ' receive. America will never forget. MEAT Center 231 E. 6th Street FRESH HAMBURGER lb. 39c PORK !
