Harold Velde, (R., 111.), declared that the "granting of statehood is a means of combatting communism in Hawaii. He was supported by Chairman Francis Walter, (D., Pa.), and Reps. Walter said he would argue for statehood at a senate hearing in Washington May 1, while Harrison, who voted against the statehood bill last month, said he would not testify against the measure again. Union Hit Hard The most damaging testimony hit the International Longshore men's and Warehousemen's union which had 14 top officials and several rank and file mem bers named as communists or former communists. Among those marked for con tempt for refusing to answer committee questions were 1LWU Regional Director Jack Hall, Public Relations Director Rob ert McElrath and the president of the ILWU Local 150, Ernest Arena.
