In recommending statehood
for the islands, Rep. Harold
Velde, (R., 111.), declared that
the "granting of statehood is a
means of combatting communism
in Hawaii. He was supported by
Chairman Francis Walter, (D.,
Pa.), and Reps. Morgan Moulder,
(D., Mo.), and Burr Harrison,
(D., Va.).
Walter said he would argue
for statehood at a senate hearing
in Washington May 1, while
Harrison, who voted against the
statehood bill last month, said
he would not testify against the
measure again.
Union Hit Hard
The most damaging testimony
hit the International Longshore
men's and Warehousemen's
union which had 14 top officials
and several rank and file mem
bers named as communists or
former communists.
Among those marked for con
tempt for refusing to answer
committee questions were 1LWU
Regional Director Jack Hall,
Public Relations Director Rob
ert McElrath and the president
of the ILWU Local 150, Ernest
Arena. All three were branded
communists by more than two
witnesses.
