Census in Multnomah Passes 1940 Figures Portland, Ore., Apr. 21 JJ.R) Multnomah county's census tal ly has passed the 1940 total and district supervisors estimate the job still is less than half com pleted. The most recent sub-total for the county showed more than 388,000 residents. In 1940 the complete tally was 353,099. Su pervisor Carl J. Gilson said only 430 of the county's 951 districts had been counted. But, Gilson added, that does not necessarily mean that the county's popula tion is more than double the 1940. He said some districts had as many as 900 persons In them while others were is low as 400 reaidenti Pi MM Rogue River Rogue River, Apr. 21 Ar rangements have been made for Commissioner L. G. DOCTORS DISAGRS E In the hope that some of the editors who warm up on my copy on the days when any of my stuff is printed may let the title stand as I write it Doctors Disagree About Smoking let us begin by conceding it is too long in the first place, like the placard put up by the res t a u r a t eur Only Fresh Eggs Served Dr. Brady Here. So we may as well shorten the title to Doctors Disagree and let it go at that, at least till some one comes up with a question on which we do not. For instance that ponderous 22-volume work. The Cyclope dia of Medicine, Surgery and Specialties, a than-whicher of the publishing field if I ever saw one, cites a clinical study made by Dr. W. M. Johnson who con cluded that: 1. Smoking apparently has no permanent effect on blood pres sure. (But wait, girls, till you hear the rebuttal. I say "girls" advisedly. Let's face it oh, well I'll just state the facts and you may draw your own conclusions). 2. There is no foundation for the popular belief that smoking decreases the weight of an indi vidual. 3 It is doubtful whether tobac co plays a major part in the etiology (medicalese for cause or causation) of angina pectoris. 4. The act of smoking, if it af fects blood pressure at all, re duces it temporarily. 5. The effect of tobacco smok ing is chiefly local, exerted prin cipally in the pharynx (throat). It is only fair to mention here that these conclusions of Dr. Johnson's were made 20 years ago. bince that time newer in struments and methods of pre cision have been introduced and tests made with these improved means have led to different con clusions. Anyway, Dr. Johnson's study of the question was a clin ical study that is, a study of patients the doctor sees from day to day and not a scientific or laboratory investigation. Drs. Maddock and Coller, us ing some of these newer instru ments, observed a consistent in crease in blood pressure and pulse rate and a decrease in skin temperature of the fingers and toes of young men with throm-bo-angiltis obliterans (Buerger's disease) when they smoked one or two cigarettes. These effects were more pronounced when the smokers inhaled than when they merely puffed; likewise when they smoked fast, in the way a "nervous" smoker does, rather than slowly and leisurely. Dr. T. C. Minnehaar. writing in Rev. med. del Rosario, Aug. '37, found by experimental and clinical observation that smok ing increases blood pressure and produces constriction of the smallest arteries (arterioles). He concluded that smoking may cause angina pectoris or inflam mation of the lining of the small Model 2000 Industry Homeowners Hobbyists Craftsmen for With 6 ttiMh Oer)t Pa eK and te eellihlna ptxli. Most physicians insist that pa tients with thrombo-angiitis or with symptoms indicating a tendency thereto early or pre monitory symptoms of Buerger's disease, that is must not smoke at all. Yet some physicians still think that excessive smoking is not the only cause of Buerger's disease; if it were, they contend, for more young persons would suffer amputation of their legs in conseauence of this degeneration of the arteries, as young and mid dle aged persons, ooin sexes, smoke too much. It may be that there is some peculiar sensitivity to the toxic or damaging effects of smoking that accounts for the gangrene of toes, foot or leg which certain individuals suffer in consequence of their excessive smoking.
