If she is a Libra (September 23-October 22) you should keep in mind that females born under that sign have a way with men. Some of them enjoy putting it to use in a flirtatious way. She may try to steal your husband. If your next door neighbor is a Virgo (August 23-September 22) she is probably a good housekeeper and an efficient handler of a budget. Your husband may hold her up to you as an example. If she is a Gemini (May 21-June 20) she is probably a wisecracker with a good sense of humor. She can cheer you up when you are blue. How long after the old Waldorf-Astoria hotel was torn down was the Empire State building open to visitors? A. The old Wal dorf was torn down in October, 1929, and the completed Empire State building was formally opened on May 1, 1931. Some speedy construction job, that. When construction was in full swing an average of four and a half stories were erected every week. Briefly Am asked if there has ever been a film version of the Bibli cal tale of Joseph and his breth ren. Many years ago there was a silent film version made. I don't remember who played Joseph but Marguerite Snow plaved Poitphar's wife. . . . Enrico Ca ruso liked to eat, and conse quently was troubled with a bulging waistline. To reduce this excess poundage Enrico originat ed an exercise calling for throw ing a handful of confetti on the floor and then picking it up piece by piece. I un derstand Katharine and Guth rie each have a floor of their own. So when Mr. McClintic gets worked up and goes out of the room slamming the door he can go to his own floor instead of into the dark of the night. New Reader Now I have a reader in Sara toga, Tex. He manufactures oil well strainers, whatever they are. I am going to keep in touch with him. Maybe he can tip me off as to where I could buy a bit of land where I might strike oil. Just a little oil is all I want. I wouldn't want to get too much money out of it because then I wouldn't have as much fun play ing my racing system. Says He "As the organizaiton I work for prefers its executives to be married, I had no other alterna tive but to get myself a wife," writes a Chicagoan. "I delayed matters as long as possible, as I love liberty. When I decided to marry I was able to approach the situation in a practical way. United Press Hollywood Correspondent Hollywood, Mar. 11 (U.R) John Ireland, who bought his way out of a juicy studio con tract, sat down and figured it, up today and discovered his freedom will cost him $250, 000 by 1955. The way Ire land feels, it's worth it, every hundred thou sand dollars of it. And if you're guessing that his parting with Columbia Studios wasn t exactly friendly, you're dead right. Ireland was so peeved at the boys out there he took his battles to court. A couple of weeks ago a judge decided everybody'd be happier if Ireland become temporarily unemployed and cancelled the contract. But there's a kicker in the deal. Ireland has to turn over to his ex-bosses one-fourth of ev ery penny he earns in the next five years. That's gonna be considerable. Because Ireland, who snagged himself an "Oscar" nomination for his emoting in "All the King's Men," is one of the hot test actors in town right now. Wants To Free Lance "But what would I be if I a well-ordered home for me. And has given me two fine sons. Some of my friends who married glamour girl types for love are not doing so well. I believe the man who approaches matrimony in the calm, calculating way I did will fare much better in the end than the fellow who mar ries some raving beauty with whom he thinks he is madly in love." FRESH AIR FOLLOWING ANESTHESIA A virus, obtained from the breathing apparatus of persons afflicted with a disease common- -.Jsqjwsn jv an(j loosely,! referred to as a "cold," has reproduced the disease when sprayed into the breathing apparatus of certain lower animals. This e x p e r i m ent should leave very little doubt as to the mechanism of oi. Brady contra cting this disease. It establishes the disease as contag ious, by being transferred from one person to another, through the air. While, seemingly, hard ly anybody questions the con tagiousness of diphtheria or scarlet fever, the public appar ently resists the fact that a so called "cold" is actually con tageous. Nearly any one can recall, once having acquired what he diagnoses as a "cold," some ex perience involving a change of weather, or a draft, which pre ceded the onset of the disease. The fact that the moon came over the mountain at about the fame time, is ignored, although everyday experience would serve to indicate that the two occur rences are of equal importance, HOLLYWOOD MicPHERSON Correspondent stayed at Columbia?" he argues. "I'd get stuck in so many low budget movies people would for get all about me. You know what I was making during 'All the King's men'? A lousy $750! That's all. "And right after my nomina tion they put me in a cheap B. When I beefed their answer was 'Well, we don't make "All the King's Men" every day.' "They're right, sure. Nobody does. But that's why I wanted out. If I can free-lance I can pick my own pictures." Ireland wasn't happy at Col umbia, anyhow, he says. Suspension Drawn "They suspended me one day for not showing up. And I was right on the lot all the time. I was even on the set working. Of course, I'll admit I didn't have my heart in my performance, shall we say? But I was there. They finally told me to go on home. "They wanted to tell me how to run my life, too. Sometimes I'd get so mad I'd have to keep out of everybody's way for a while. Otherwise, I'd have socked somebody in the nose." Ireland says there's one bright spot in working five years for three-fourths of his paycheck. "Columbia has to pay all the taxes on that other 25 per cent," he grinned. "It'll go straight to them. I won't ever see it." IM35E3 Km VOl? js la. " II - - I or unimportance, insofar as res piratory aisease is concerned. Who ever heard of the butcher being constantly plagued with "colds" because he enters the refrigerator countless times each day? Who ever proved that a "draft" of nice, crisp air ever did anything to anybody except to refresh them, or merely to annoy them? Were you ever Impelled by curiosity to gather around with the rest of the curious to see what goes on in the middle of the crowd? And did you ever have the experience of having a big policeman stand on your feet and push you in the chest along with the order to "stand back and give 'im air?" The de sire for "air" is instinctive with most persons following any type of injury. The miserable person who has consumed a quantity of alcoholic beverage too great for him to "handle," instinctively seeks the "air" the colder the better. A patient still under anesthe sia following' the completion of an operation, needs air. He is in toxicated just as surely as is the alcoholic but with a different, but comparable, drug. The notion that such a patient should be shielded from the air is absurd. Nevertheless, the old, morbid and unscientific notion that fresh air will cause a "draft" and "chill" the patient, leads to the practice in many institutions, even in this enlightened day, of shutting the patient's window, or in other ways "shielding" him from fresh air. The notion that fresh air in the form of a draft (there is no other way of getting it) will cause the patient to de velop "post-operative pneumo nia" can not be supported by scientific evidence. Nobody has ever proved that fresh air ever hurt anyone. It is curious, to say the least, that in high class hospitals the ancient custom of depriving a drugged, senseless patient from ...itv, fresh revivifying stimulating air is still perpetuat ed. Is the incidence ui ' nia, following surgery in the open, near the battle field, where the air blows freely and where there are no windows to close, higher than In the stuffy, stale rooms of the hospital? The ans wer is NO. A reasonable relative or friend of a patient undergoing surgery, is completely within the brackets of intelligent conduct when he demands fresh air, and plenty of it at all times, for the victim.
