Ellis New York, Mar. 11 01 R) Three West Coast scientists re ported today that a "marriage" between the drugs penicillin and streptomycin results in a super drug more effective than either when used alone. They based their findings on a laboratory experiment in which the drugs were tested on Adventist Saturday Worship Talk Topic "Why Adventists Observe Sat urday as a Day of Rest" will be the subject of the sermon at the Adventist Church Sunday eve ning, according to Pastor O. Kill.d Rapidly The scientists, Drs. E. Jawetz, J. B. Gunnison and V. R. Cole man, of the University of Cali fornia medical school, San Fran cisco, said in Science magazine that populations of the bacteria were rapidly killed off when penicillin and streptomycin were working as a team, They pointed out that penicit lin alone did a good job jn kil ling off the germs, but that its peak performance might be in creased as much as ten-fold with streptomycin in on the act. Streptomycin, working alone, did not equal the performance of penicillin, the scientists said. In scientific language, the har monious and cooperative action of two more agents is known as a synergism, and the coast sci entists believe that their experi ments, which were conducted in the test tube, have proved that there is a "true synergism of the two drugs." Action Not As Great The experiment also showed, the scientist reported, that Chlo romycetin, another so-called "wonder drug," had some effect on the streptococci bacteria when mixed with penicillin but that the action was not as great as performed by penicillin alone. Thus, the scientists believe that Chloromycetin "somehow in terfered with the earlv bacteri cidal effects of penicillin. The phenomenon was observed with all nine strains of the bacteria, but not in the same degree, they said. The scientists work is signifi cant in that it may lead to a type of drug treatment in those per sons who become immune to penicillin or streptomycin after prolonged treatment.
