Science at Work Planes To Fly So Fast That Human Pilots Will Hbt. To Civ Way To Robots, Specialist Predicts By Paul F. Ellis United Press Science Editor New York, Feb. 16 U.R Man is learning to fly so rapidly that the day may be coming when the electronic brain will have to lake over the controls. Man, according to S. Paul Johnston, director of the Insti tute of Aeronautical Sciences, "can't stand the gaff" at 1,300 miles an hour, a speed which he Prospect Prospect, Ore., Feb. 18 Val entine parties were held in the Prospect grade school on St. Valentine's day. The games are to consist of pinochle, bridge and canasta. A party sponsored by Pros pect high school boys and girls basket ball teams was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hal stoad Degman February 10. The occasion was to honor Mr. and Mrs. Popp who coach the teams. Ice cream, cake, and hot choco late were served, and games and tricks provided entertainment. Attending were Louise Degman, Vava Jean Moore, Jlmmle Len derman, Jerry Note, Neil Knud sen, Beverly Robertson, Donna Harmon Joanne Hollenheak, Dave Campbell, Dolores Millard, Joan Williams, Vern Andrescn, Ray Gibson, Maxine Chandler, Bob Nelson, Sonna Stnggs, Rich ard Barber, Alan Barber, Roger Snyder, Genildlnc Roberta, Ken ny Vaughn, John Redd, Johnny Axtcl, and Mr. and Mrs. Popp. Mr. and Mrs. Halstcad Deg man returned home Tuesday from their trip through the southern states after Journeying by plane to Lansing, Mich., to purchase a new automobile. They left Thursday to travel through Washington state and visit friends and relatives. Approximately 30 people at tended the young peoples party at the Church of the Naiarenc. And at such speeds, to make a turn of any thing less than a mile radius is an invitation to 'black out,' even when wearing the best of our so-called 'G' suits." He believes that man Is near ing his limits of endurance, and that there are machines now that can do a Job better than a human brain. "The obvious thing to do," he said, "is to take the human be ing out of the machine; to re place him with electronic and mechanical devices that can do the pilot's work and still sur vive. Sees Days Of Missiles Johnston snld intercontinental guided missiles equipped with atomic or high-explosive war heads "are certainly under in tensive study and development by every major power In the world." "How soon they will be ready for use on an effective scale is still anybody's guess." he added. "For the next decade, at least, any Intercontinental warfare will be waged with piloted aircraft.
