Planes To Fly So Fast That Human Pilots Will Hbt. To
Civ Way To Robots, Specialist Predicts
By Paul F. Ellis
United Press Science Editor
New York, Feb. 16 U.R
Man is learning to fly so rapidly
that the day may be coming
when the electronic brain will
have to lake over the controls.
Man, according to S. Paul
Johnston, director of the Insti
tute of Aeronautical Sciences,
"can't stand the gaff" at 1,300
miles an hour, a speed which he

predicts might become a reality
in 1955.
"There Is no doubt whatever
that we now possess the know
how to build practical aircraft
that will fly at speeds of 1,000
to 1,500 miles an hour, or even
faster," he reported to the
Cooper Union.
It is not sure, he said, that
such high-speed planes will have
military value.
Limits Of Endurance
Johnston said "no human
pilot" could operate a plane go
ins 1.500 miles an hour.
At 1,000 miles per hour, a
pilot is traveling almost a quar
ter of a mile a second. In the
time that it takes you to count
five slowly you are a mile from
where you started. And at such
speeds, to make a turn of any
thing less than a mile radius is
an invitation to 'black out,' even
when wearing the best of our
so-called 'G' suits."
He believes that man Is near
ing his limits of endurance, and
that there are machines now
that can do a Job better than a
human brain.
"The obvious thing to do," he
said, "is to take the human be
ing out of the machine; to re
place him with electronic and
mechanical devices that can do
the pilot's work and still sur
vive. Sees Days Of Missiles
Johnston snld intercontinental
guided missiles equipped with
atomic or high-explosive war
heads "are certainly under in
tensive study and development
by every major power In the
world."
"How soon they will be ready
for use on an effective scale is
still anybody's guess." he added.
"For the next decade, at least,
any Intercontinental warfare will
be waged with piloted aircraft.
LonB ranee let bombers flying
at speeds of over 800 miles per
hour, at altitudes of 30,000 to
40,000 feet, will press home the
nttnek on military and Industrial
objectives deep In enemy terri
tory.
Johnston also believes that
the idea of an artificial satellite.
or moon, Is "within our reach."
"Mv guess Is," he said, "that
the oh might be done In 23 to
30 years, if really pushed."
