Grants Pass came through with several fast break plays in the last two quarters and out jumped the tiring Eagles to pound in many more rebounds that in the first half to bring out a victory by a somewhat easv margin. Eagle Point, sporting new basketball uniforms of yellow with dark blue numbering and lettering, got off to a good start by building up a io s w the first six minutes before Grants Pass started to find the range and almost catch up with the scoring. Long Shots Count The Cavemen also showed good ability to sink baskets from outside the "key" as well as use their taller and heavier players to push in rebounds off the back boards. . . . . Larry Cummins Sr. is the new president of the Willows Car dinals in the Far West. State AAU Cage Tourney Slated. Oregon state championship AAU basketball playoffs will be held at McMinnville starting Saturday, February 25, and con tinuing on February 26, 27 and March 1. It was necessary to eliminate February 28 to avoid confliction with a district high school game that date. The tourney will be played in the McMinnville armory which is said to have a seating capacity of about 3.000 persons. District AAU tournament for teams in Jackson, Josephine and Curry counties will open in a Medford gymnasium to be an nounced later on Tuesday, Feb ruary 21, with the final round nt Grants Pass high gym on Wednesday, February 22. St. Mary's JVs Defeat Ashland Quint, 39-37 St. Mary's junior varsity bas ketball team defeated the Ash land high jayvees 39 to 37 yes terday after the local parocniai school boys had led 20 to 17 at the halftime pause. Laverne (Kip) Taylor, the Oregon State coach, said last night he was offered the position, but indicated he wasn't inter ested. Taylor said he received a long-distance telephone call from Paul Brechler, Iowa athletic di rector who is in New York. Anderson resigned at Iowa after 12 years there. Drills will be held Mondays through Frl days from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the announcement stated. Burdette and Thomas said they are negotiating; with Bill Berry to defend his southern Oregon welterweight amateur championship on the next card, to be held on February 22.
