February S, I9S0 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN S TO A D Players and Manager For Medford Due Medford's entry In the Far West Baseball league will have two working agreements this coming season with the New York Giants of the National league joining the Seattle Rai niers of the Pacific Coast league as helpers for the club. New York, whose agreement was announced today by Busi ness Manager JJel Carpenter of the local club, probably will provide a playing-manager as well as ballplayers. Name of the manager will be announced as soon as one or two items are decided. Eight Prospects On Coast Carpenter said the Giants had informed him that the major league club has about eight pros pects out on the west coast that can help the Nuggets this season. The local club whose nick name this year may be changed to some other than "Nuggets," will train with Idaho Falls, Ida., of the class C Pioneer league, at Santa Maria, Cal., about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Medford will also get seven or eight players from Seattle and probably two or three from Salem of the class B Western International league, Carpenter stated. Up To Local Club The local business manager explained tnat inese clubs will assign players to the Medford club but it will be up to the locals to decide which they will keep. Carpenter said that the local organization can sign any players here it wishes and ac cept others from other clubs. Directly the local class D club will work with Enid, Okla. Spring training at Santa Maria is expected to start for the local prospects about April 10. To give players a fair deal, it has been ordered that no major league club begin spring training before March I, especially since the players draw no salaries for any part of the training period. The New York Yankees and the New York Giants were ac cused of breaking this rule by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Commissioner A. B. Chandler supported Rickey. The spring training regulation cropped up when Chandler warned that clubs violating it faced "stiff penalties." The New York Yankees replied that the commissioner couldn't mean them. The Yanks admitted they had nine players working as in structors at a screening camp for minor league players at Phoenix but insisted these men were not in training." Instructors Leave Chandler eliminated those doubts when he said the instruct ors were violating the rule. The Yanks sent the men home. The Giants followed suit. The Pirates troubles started with the signing of Los Angeles prep school star Paul Pettit for $100,000. Several other major league clubs were seeking the boy but ran into a gimmick. It was this: Pettit already was signed to an exclusive contract by a movie producer, Frederick Stephani, before he graduated from high school. As soon as Pettit got his diploma, Stephani sold out to the Pirates. Chandler s office said an in vestigation failed to turn up any evidence that the rule was broken. trr 7T-f? TV u n. Two of the winter circuit's les ser known professionals, Wally Ulrich of Minneapolis, Minn., and Manuel de la Torre of Chi cago, headed the unmerciful field of 150 50 of whom shat tered regulation figures in the opening round yesterday. Ulrich and de la Torre shot six-under 64 s. Others who got into the par busting act were Toney Penna of Cincinnati and George Buck of Westport, Conn., with 60s. Boxing Dated Senior High Boxing will provide the sports menu at the senior high school gym tonight when the Black Tornado ringsters meet Grants Pass in an inter-school meet. It will be the only event for sports fans in Medford tonight with the high school basketball teams playing at Roseburg this evening and the junior high at Klamath Falls this afternoon. Twelve bouts will comprise tonight's card, scheduled to start at 8 o'clock, and local boxers tak ing part will include five or six who won local championships last season or were runners-up. Coach Fred Spiegelberg said today. Referee will be Larry Bur- dette and there will be no judges. Two-minute rounds will be fought by all. School Gyms Open To Boys Saturday Four local grade school evms ana tne ones at tne senior nign and junior high schools will be open Saturday for the usual weekly recreation for bovs wish ing an indoor place to play. The gyms are open from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Last week's attendance at the six schools totaled 340 with Washington having the most boys with 71, followed by the senior high with 68, Roosevelt 63, Lincoln 57, junior high 46 and Jackson with 44. Lee Rags dale, director of athletics, is in general charge of the program. He said today that he is "pleased with the attendance" and gave indication the opening of the six school gyms each Sat urday would continue at least through February. Boys were reminded that gym shoes or stocking feet are neces sary before they play on the gym floors. quintet. Sanford for Jacksonville got 12 points to lead his team. The second game of the eve ning saw Groceteria come back in the second quarter after being behind 12 to 1 at the first period whistle to tie the game at 30 to 30 at the halftime. Kelly poured in 18 points for Brownie's to help the plumbers to a 52 to 48 victory. Stanlev scored 15 and Milkowski got 18 to lead Groeetria. AAU Basketball league games tonight at the junior high gym will put Jacksonville against Swayze at 7 p.m. and Rogue River against Timber Products. Conference Tilts Dated Southern Oregon conference and district 4 basketball games for A schools Saturday will send Ashland to Central Point, and Grants Pass to Klamath Falls with the hitter probably being a decided factor in both teams' chances of winning the district championship. A win for Klamath Falls would give the conference and district a three-way tie for first place between Medford and Grants Pass at four wins and one defeat each. Medford is not scheduled to play a conference- oistnct game either Friday or baturday. Games tonight in the district and conference will send Kerby to Klamath Falls and Eagle r oini to Asniand 1,500 View Trotters In Local Game More than 1,500 persons jam med every inch of standing and sitting space at the senior hieh gym to see the famous Harlem Ulobetrotters basketball team put on their laugh-provoking stunts and some topnotch ball handling and passing to defeat a local AAU league all-star quintet. It was not known this morning exactly what the "take" was at the game but saw the Negro team win easily 66 to 34 but it was expected to net Rogue Val ley Baseball, inc., sponsors 01 the Medford Nuggets, and the AAU Basketball league several hundred dollars. Talent Downs Phoenix A prelim to the main event last night on the same floor saw Talent town team edge the Phoenix town team in an AAU league tilt. Scores for the AAU all-stars last nieht showed Dollencheck scoring 4 points, Tex Gatlin 2, M. O. Busack 2, Barnev Riggs 4, Bill Singler 8, Billy Arnold 3, Billy Werner 7 and Snuffy Smith 4. The Globetrotters had 41 to 20 lead at the half. Business-manager Mel Carpen ter of the Nuggets said that many fans were turned away be cause of lack of room. SOC Basketball Tilts Week-End Cancelled Ashland, Feb. 3 Oregon College of Education which was slated to play Southern Oregon college on the SOC floor tonight and Saturday evening in Oregon Collegiate conference games, has can celled its trip and there will be no college games here. St. Mary's Coach Resigns His Job San Francisco, Feb. 3 (U.R) The St. Mary's college board of athletic control meets again to day to discas the surprise resig nation of football Coach Joe Verducci. Verducci handed in his resig nation yesterday, accompanied, a St. Mary's spokesman said, by j "certain stipulations." The board I met until a late hour last night j to talk it over but adjourned ) without making a decision. The spokesman declined to say what the "stipulations" were but it was believed they had to do with financial settlement of the $9,000 a year contract. Verducci signed a three-year contract just before the 1949 season. It still has two and one half years to run. Hudson Reduces Automobile Prices Detroit. Feb. 3 U.R) Hudson Motor Car company chopped S87.50 to $166.50 from the fac tory price of some of Its cars today. The Hudson announcement came on the heels of an across the board cut by Studebaker that slashed $82 to $135 from its en tire 1950 line. The Hudson price slash was on its more expensive cars Prices on the company's new, shorter car, the "Pacemaker" re main unchanged. Price tag. on the super six two-door sedan now Is $1,925, f.o.b. School Youths Seek Basketball Opponents A group of boyi living in the Howard school area but at tending ichools in Medford are looking for games with AAU learns, school quintets or oth ers interested in playing Wed nesday nights. The Howard school gym Is available for games. The youths seeking gamai range in age from 14 to 18 and are not playing for school teams. Referees are available for such games. The blanks may be obtained from the veterans' department offices, 305 state library build ing, Salem, and 415 Southwest 11th street, Portland; county service officers and major veter an's organizations. Veterans who were legul resi dents of Pennsylvania when they entered the service will re ceive $10 per month for domes tic duty and $15 per month for foreign duty if they served more than 60 days between Dec. 7, 1941 and Sept. 2, 1945. Maximum payment is $500. Eligible survivors of veterans who died in service between those dates will be paid $500; otherwise, they will receive the amount the veteran would have been paid.
