Players and
Manager For
Medford Due
Medford's entry In the Far
West Baseball league will have
two working agreements this
coming season with the New
York Giants of the National
league joining the Seattle Rai
niers of the Pacific Coast league
as helpers for the club.
New York, whose agreement
was announced today by Busi
ness Manager JJel Carpenter of
the local club, probably will
provide a playing-manager as
well as ballplayers. Name of
the manager will be announced
as soon as one or two items are
decided.
Eight Prospects On Coast
Carpenter said the Giants had
informed him that the major
league club has about eight pros
pects out on the west coast that
can help the Nuggets this season.
The local club whose nick
name this year may be changed
to some other than "Nuggets,"
will train with Idaho Falls, Ida.,
of the class C Pioneer league,
at Santa Maria, Cal., about 150
miles north of Los Angeles.
Medford will also get seven or
eight players from Seattle and
probably two or three from
Salem of the class B Western
International league, Carpenter
stated.
Up To Local Club
The local business manager
explained tnat inese clubs will
assign players to the Medford
club but it will be up to the
locals to decide which they will
keep. Carpenter said that the
local organization can sign any
players here it wishes and ac
cept others from other clubs.
Directly the local class D club
will work with Enid, Okla.
Spring training at Santa
Maria is expected to start for
the local prospects about April
10. The training camp will be
broken April 22 and the Med
ford club expects to play several
exhibition games while travel-

Chandler Backs Rickey

Charges that tome of baseball's
most lily-white rules were being
broken, or at least badly bent.

Chandler eliminated those
doubts when he said the instruct
ors were violating the rule. The
Yanks sent the men home. The
Giants followed suit.
The Pirates troubles started
with the signing of Los Angeles
prep school star Paul Pettit for
$100,000. Several other major
league clubs were seeking the
boy but ran into a gimmick.
It was this: Pettit already was
signed to an exclusive contract
by a movie producer, Frederick
Stephani, before he graduated
from high school. As soon as
Pettit got his diploma, Stephani
sold out to the Pirates.
Chandler s office said an in
vestigation failed to turn up any
evidence that the rule was
broken.

tonight's card, scheduled to start
at 8 o'clock, and local boxers tak
ing part will include five or six
who won local championships
last season or were runners-up.

Referee will be Larry Bur-

judges. Two-minute rounds will
be fought by all.
School Gyms Open

"pleased with the attendance"
