REDSKINS DEFEAT GOLD HILL QUINT; TALENT TROUNCED Jacksonville, Feb. 20 Com ing from behind in a wild fray the Jacksonville Redskins chalk ed up a 34 to 24 Southern Ore gon class "B" division one bas ketball win over Gold Hill here last night. The Redskins held a first quarter advantage of 8 to 6 and the count was knotted 12 12 at halftime. The winners were enjoying a 20 to 17 margin at end of the third stanza and Gold Hill narrowed the gap still more as the final ptriod got underway bu the Beavers were unable to keep up the pace. Writes Scarbrought 'Tour naments are well and good, provided the teams taking part haven't already been playing each other every other week end during the season, but U to much nonsense in a four team loop such as ours. Tis a different tune being whistled by Jerry Acklen in the Grants Pass Courier, how ever. Acklen points out ad vantages of tournament and conference play and says tournament play is favored by most coaches about two to one. According to Acklen's writ ings, the Cavemen are evi dently pointing with much gusto to the coming tourna ment and, unlike the Pelicans In Scarbrough's article, would feel no shame at Bliding in through the back door. Ashland has been quiet on the whole affair, even refusing to vote when the tournament Idea was first talked, but watch them come storming in through the back door if someone opens it wide enough! It Is our desire to see either the Southern Oregon conference or the district four tournament abolished next vear. Some popularity was expected but Director of Athletics Bill Bowerman was totally unpre pared for the popularity the baskets have received. Com ing home at 1 a. m. the other day, Bowerman noticed lights on at the tonnis courts. Think ing something wrong, he in vestigated and found several youngsters engaged in a bas ketball game on the tennis courts! Two basketball tournaments are now under way at the high school. Greene of the National Boxing association, de manded today that Lightweight Champion Ike Williams of Tren ton, N. J., meet a recognized challenger in a title bout at once. Greene said that postponement of Williams' "title-clarifying" bout with Bob Montgomery, the lightweight champion in New York and affiliated states, made the action necessary.
