said today. 'Stockstill has been
brought here from Portland es
pecially to handle the arbiter
chores for the stellar card,
which pits seven of the coast's
best junior-heavyweights in the

Our campaign against the dis
trict four basketball tournament
gained some support last week
when Hale Scarbrough of the
Klamath Falls Herald and News
came out with a blast against a
play-off to determine an .entry
for the state tournament.

haven't already been playing
each other every other week
end during the season, but U

team loop such as ours. Cer
tainly Medfor" is going to get
no great joy out of beating
Klamath Falls again, if things
turn out that way. nor should
the Pelicans have anything to
shout about if they slide in
ahead of the Tornado after two
defeats already.
"This isn't detracting from the
fact that we think the Pelicans
have a good team or could give
a good account of themselves in
the state tourney, but if Klam
ath does go on up we'd just as
soon feel that we'd earned the
district title by basketball and
not squeezed in through the
back door. This department's
angle is to drop the tourney and
let the season's record stand for
what it's worth, or bring enough
teams into the loop to make the
play-off worthwhile."

whistled by Jerry Acklen in
the Grants Pass Courier, how
ever. Acklen points out ad
vantages of tournament and
conference play and says
tournament play is favored by
most coaches about two to one.

manded today that Lightweight
Champion Ike Williams of Tren
ton, N. J., meet a recognized
challenger in a title bout at once.
Greene said that postponement
of Williams' "title-clarifying"
bout with Bob Montgomery, the
lightweight champion in New
York and affiliated states, made
the action necessary.
Williams was scheduled to
meet Montgomery, Philadelphia
negro at Madison Square Garden
in March, but the bo,ut recently
was postponed to May 17.
