'HE claim of the Veterans, Administration that it is more costly to remodel than to "start from scratch" is not borne out by obvious facts. Officers who have served at Camp White maintain that the principal needs at this hospital are air conditioning and landscaping. The cost would be a fraction of the sum earmarked for new construction at Klamath Falls, less than 80 miles away. To discard this fine Camp White hospital, built less than four years .ago, and build a new one with less than one-tenth the capacity does not seem to us to be good administration. Although assurance has been given by the Veterans Administration that Camp White will be surveyed before they embark upon the building program at Klamath Falls, the people of our neighboring community continue to receive assur ances that their location is "in the bag" when the VA appropriations are doled out ' pAMP WHITE'S hospital is more centrally located from a population standpoint. Here the altitude is lower and the climate more mild and equable. Here may be found more medical men, in Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland, which is an important factor when we consider the plan of the Veterans Administration Medical bervice to lean heavily Upon the services ol part-time doctors in its future hospitalization pro gram. But, if the southern Oregon situation is repre sentative of the nation-wide handling of the veterans' program, we believe that Legion Commander John Stelle's demand for Bradley's replacement by a "sea soned businessman" should be given thoughtful con sideration. Because there is no law in the books which covers this charge the culprit was jailed for public drunkenness. This item calls attention to an imminent prooiem that will go hand in hand with increased air travel. Added to the charge of "drunken driving" will now be that of "drunken flying." Byron once said : "What's drinking a mere pause from thinking!" Thinking is even more necessarv at the controls of an airplane than at the wheel of an automobile. The chances of surviving a smashup are alot less. JUST what degree of intoxication must be reached comes a matter for speculation. Tom Peacock, the English poet and novelist, offered thia gem of wisdom at the middle of the 19th century: "Not drunk is he who from the rioor . Can rife alone and still drink more; But drunk Is he who prostrate lies, without the power to drink or rise." We have a hunch that a different viewpoint will be held by those who write the new statutes aimed at the tippling aviator. Liquor and aviation ethyl won't mix very well. H.G. . Good News, But .... FHE word that millions of pounds of sugar not re-1 quired by the armed forces in the Pacific is being brought back to alleviate the sugar shortage here is sweet news to citizens of the U. S. The Navy's acknowledgment, however, that this sugar will be used to replenish Navy stocks somewhat sours the good tidings. Assurance of Navy officials that this move "should indirectly ease the civilian scarcity" is, of course, correct in a measure. But now that shooting is over and the military forces are being demobilized it is high time to put a stop to hoarding bv the Armv and Navy. . .a. I am sorry for the readers who take such medical and nursing instruction and advice from a person who has had no train ing and nj education to qualify her to give such instruction or advice. I am sorry for school teach' ers who are required by the school authorities to decide whether a pupil shall remain in school or go home with sniffles or a cour.h. In dead earnest I say this: No body, not even a doctor, can tell at the onset or in the earliest stage of an illness or indisposi tion what it is going to be or whether It is . communicable or not. All of the respiratory in fections are most infectious, most likely to spread to other per sons, in the earliest stage or onset. Therefore, to assume that any illness or indisposition is "Just a cold" or a "slight cold" is a foolish attempt to deceive yourself or a reprehensible at tempt to deceive others and per haps endanger their very lives. The plane cruised at 275 miles per hour most of tha way except for a stretch between Fresno and Bakersfield when it ran up to 305 miles per hour. 56 On Flight Fifty - six persons, including the crew, made the flight, the largest number ever flown in a commercial airliner between the two cities. Yesterday, the plane flew from New York to Los Angeles in 10 hours, 49 minutes flying time, a new transcontinental commercial record, with the largest pas senger load ever carried across country.
