Many years ago Mr. Jos. W. England was pharmacist in the Philadelphia uonerai nospuui. He concocted this agreeable v(i.m. actrincrpnt . carffle. and vnn nrpnare it vourself or let your druggist prepare it for you as follows: . Dissolve 2 drams (two level teaspoonfuls) of potassium chlorate in four fluid ounces (one-fourh of a pint) of boil ing water, and let it stand to cool. Now dissolve one dram (level tcaspoonful) of alum In 2V4 fluid ounces of Stronger Rose Water (Aqua Hosae For tior, U. S. P.) and add to the solution, in the order named: one-half fluid ounce (table spoonful) of glycerin, one half fluid ounce of plain syrup or clear honey and finally three fluid drams (teaspoonfuls) of fluid extract of eucalyptus rostrata (red gum). Shako this ruby red mixture up and add it to the potassium chlorate solution, which has been cool ing. The product should be a clear ruby-red liquid of agree able odor and taste. Dear.. Even though Christmas has passed, a festive air still prevails with Christmas tree lights still glowing each evening and doors still hung with holiday wreaths. The past week brought the tra ditional Christmas ' programs at all Medford churches and dozens of parties, including special af fairs for officers and enlisted men o'. the army and navy and parties for patients at the Camp White hospital. Further parties are set for tills week-end and New Year's Eve, after which ev eryone will endeavor to settle down once more to the usual routine of business and school. Christmas was made especial ly happy In some Medford homes by the return of sons, daughters and fathers from far away points. Dozens are arriving' daily after separation from their service, duties, .and others arc home only for the holidays. Among those who arrived home from overseas in time for the holidays were Lt. Col. Wm. H. Fluhrcr from Austria; Lt. Col. C. O. Lovcjoy, also home from Europe; Lt. Col. Harlan Bos worth, home from the Nether lands; Sgt. Robert Vroinan from England; Sgt. Martin B. Webb, Jr., who has been serving on the staff of the Stars and Stripes in Honolulu; Miss Cherokee Seller, who served two and one-half years in the Spars; Staff Sgt. Reuben O. Davis, who served with the 37th division In the Pa cific theater; Dr. O. J. Hulboth, who has been stationed at Camp Bealc with the medical corps; Cpl. Lester Wright, overseas for 23 months; Cpl. Joe and TSgl. Casad, the former from Lt. Mc Clcllan and the latter from Man ila; Bill Colley, Coxswain in the navy who will return to duty aboard the Livingston; Pfc. Walter R. Gregg, chief warrant officer, whose release terminated 27 years of service in the navy. Twenty-six members of the 1045 Medford high school foot bull team, southern Oregon con ference and district two cham pions, were awarded football letters last week. Thirty-five plHyers, two managers and three coaches will attend the East West shrine game In San Fran cisco New Year's Day, the trip having been arranged by Med ford business men and service clubs. Of these, one contained a pound of butter which was later claimed and identified through the wrap ping. This article of food, in cidentally, is very hard to find. Along with other valley towns, Central Point is experi encing much business activity. Walter Leverette has purchased a site for a theater for that town and another new industry is a small factory to make kitchen furniture. Both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars are rapidly pushing plans for buildings to house veteran activities. From Washington, it Is an nounced that Camp White, re cently reactivated with several engineer units, will be retained as a training center for the pres ent. Baker, formerly In the restaurant business in Med ford but now a resident of An chorage, Alaska, recently gent her daughter-in-law, Mrs. M. Chambers, 130 West Main street, a clipping from an Alaska paper which compared Alaska weather with that of the United States. The article reported that the northern part of continental United States was suffering from s u b-z e r o temperatures with deaths of at least 30 people at tributed to the cold weather while Anchorage was in the midst of "banana belt" weather. Anchorage residents were en joying a warm spell of 31 de grees with temperatures of freez ing or above forecast for the next two days, the article stated. "Temperatures may go as high ! as 40 degrees before a cold wave ' moves in from the west," the ar-' tide quoted the weather bureau as stating. McCrehin will begin here just as socn as materials can be ob tained and weather permits. McCrehin, who formerly operated a general store and oil company in Leonard, Minn., has considered opening a similar business here but is uncertain yet as to whether he will install a store of his own or lease the building.
