LOCAL and To Hold Meeting The monthly business meeting of the Friends Church, which was postponed irom Thursday eve ning because of illness of some of the members, will be held following the morning church service next Sunday. All mem bers of the organization are asked to remain for the session. In Washington Charles Lewis, 308 Ashland avenue, is spending the holidays with rela tives near Bellingham, Wash. Mr. Lewis' daughter, Mrs. Charles Cuthbertson of Chico, Calif., left Wednesday for her home in Chico, Calif., after hav ing been a patient in the Ash land hospital for the past sev eral days. Plan Watch Party A New Year's "watch party" will be held in the social room of St. Peter's Lutheran church. East Main and Portland avenue ac cording to the pastor, Harry H. Young. Pastor and Mrs. Young and their daughters will be hosts for the affair and there will be games and refreshments. A brief devotional service will be held at midnight. The af fair will begin at 9 p. m. O. Alender fer, 139 Ivy street, left by plane today for Portland, having been called there by the death of his mother, Mrs. Jane Alenderfer. Burial of Mrs. Alenderfer is to take place in the east. Student Hera James H. El liott, Sic and a student of the University of Nebraska Medical school, Omaha, Neb., is spending the Christmas holidays in Med ford with relatives. He flew from Omaha to Portland and drove from there to Medford with Dr. and Mrs. William L. Barnum, Portland, who are also visiting here. Mrs. Barnum is the former Amy Elliott. Children Home Pauline A. Champlin, Ylc, and her broth er, Charles P. Champlin, have returned to the home of their mother, Mrs. G. H. Maasdam, 420 South Central avenue. Veo man Champlin is on leave from the port director's office, 12th naval district, San Francisco, and is to leave Sunday to report for further duty. She expects to be released from the navy within the next two months. Charles P. Champlin returned home this week following separa tion from the army. Open House Set The Rev. and Mrs. Elvin S. Hansen will entertain members and friends of Zion Lutheran church at an open house at the parsonage, 518 West Fourth street, Sunday, Dec. 30, between the hours of 2:30 and 5 p. m. Presidents of the women's organizations of the church have been asked to act as assistant hostesses. They are Mrs. Paul Rynning, Mrs. Alf Brewold and Mrs. William Myers. All members and friends of the church are cordi ally invited to attend, the Rev. Hansen states. Smallwood Home Fred M. Smallwood, son of Mrs. E. Smallwood, 615 South Central avenue, returned home Wednes day from Ft. Lewis, Wash., wjere he received an honorable discharge from the army in fantry. Smallwood, who held the rank of technician, fourth grade, while in the service, spent two years overseas, serving with the fifth army in Italy and the seventh army in France and Germany. He received four bronre battle stars and an arrow head for participation in the In vasion of Southern France. Smallwood attended Medford high school before entering the service. Impulsive Dealer Destroys Liquor Houston, Tex., Dec. 28 U.R) Impulsive Louis Boldreghini, liquor dealer who steps outside his store each Saturday to throw dimes away, today calmly super vised the destruction of the last of $80,000 worth of rum, wines and brandies. "That's Junk," he said. "I'm tired of shoving that stuff down the customers' throats." There was no catch to the destruction, he said, and state liquor control officers agreed. He will get no refund on liquor taxes nor will he be able to write it off as a loss on his in come tax. British Round Up Jewish Terrorists Jerusalem, Dec. 28 (U.R) Units of the British 6th air borne division blockaded the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv today and began arresting hundreds of suspected Jewish terrorists after a night of gun fire and bombings in four Pales tine cities that caused at least 10 deaths. Authorities hinted strongly that many of the arrested men would be deported from the holy land If Investigation con firmed the general belief that the night's violence was the w:rk of secret Jewish "armies." Distressed Ship Has Bomb Cargo New York, Dec. 28 (U.R) The liberty ship Henry D. Thoreau was "in distress" today off the Azores, with a cargo of bombs, apparently loosened by storms, threatening to smash through rwr hull, a signal inter cepted here by naval air-sea rescue command said. The distress signal, picked up at 5 . m., said that if the bombs gave way completely, "nothing can save us." Seeking to rid the city of rats and wipe out typhus, the city has organized a three-man rat control crew with a mobile workshop and equipment. Pratt, Medford, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Denney, Colo. J. OSCAR FRAZIER J. Oscar Frazier, 79, 1018 West 10th street, passed away yesterday afternoon in a local hospital. He had been a resi dent of the community for 30 years. Arrangements are in charge of Conger-Morris Fun eral Home and will be announc ed later. PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX FORMS OUT SOON The county assessor's office will mail early next week per sonal property tax return blanks to approximately 4,000 Jackson county taxpayers. They will re ceive them after the first of the year. The returns should be fill ed out and returned as soon as possible, and not later than March 2 next. Failure to make a return is punishable by a fine of $10 per Bay for each day of delay. Personal property taxes for 1948, payable November 15 next, will be compiled from the returns. After 49 years in the business, the 71-year-old conductor re cently took his last fare on one of the city's electric streetcars, and retired to do some of the fishing and hunting he's been missing.
