EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL-TBIBUNE Tuesday, Doc. 11, 194S Your Health and It's Care By DR. WILHAM BRADY. M.D. Readers should address inquiries toi Dr William Brady. 26S El Camino Beverly Hills. Calif. CALCIUM CARBON To neutralize, absorb or coun teract excessive acidity in the stomach and relieve pain, burn ing, near i burn," "water brash", "hun ger pal n", "empty pain", "gas or other distress or dis comfort due t o hyperacid ity, the rem edy most fre quently used W salera t u S. t&af ii&M otherwise call- Dr. Brady ed baking itoda or sodium bicarbonate, there Is an old saying that "bicarbonate of soda has stop ped more pains than mor phine", which may be true, but nevertheless the use of It for this purpose day by day is ob jectionable because In some in stances It brings on alkalosis, kidney Injury, diminished ex cretion of nitrogen and even la. Such alkalosis Is not caused by Just occasional use of sodium bicarbonate but may seriously complicate the picture In some cases where sufferers have taken large doses of soda daily. Magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia), magnesium car bonate and light heavy magne sium oxide powder may be ideal for counteracting excessive acid In some circumstances under the physician's instructions, but for habitual use any of these magnesium preparations has two rerlous objections. First, the by product of Its reaction with acid Is purgative, Second, and more Important, magnesium, either as an antacid or magnesium sul fate (Epson salts) used frequent ly as a purgative, causes calcium iihortage In the body and fur thermore magnesium actually inhibits or hampers physiologi cal calcium metabolism, and most Americans suffer from cal cium deficiency anyway. Calcium carbonate (prepared chalk) Is in my opinion the least objectionable and most satisfac tory antacid for everyday use. A few grains of It neutralizes excessive acidity for hours. It has little if any effect on acid base balance in the blood and hence will not cause alkalosis. And all the calcium one may take In this form is if anything a nutritional advantage. Then if a small quantity of absorbent magnesium trislllcato Is incor porated with the calcium car bonate In discs which are almost tasteless, the adsorbent action of the latter combined with the antacid action of the former gives the most satisfactory pre paration for everyday use. In the pamphlet "Yankee Stomach" (for copy send stamp ed self addressed envelope) you will find suggestions about diet for hyperacidity and the way to prevent malnutrition from fol lowing cut and dried diets too strictly. Finally, I am convinced that no harm can come, even if no good is done by the use of this antacid and adsorbent pre paration as often as you wish. questions ANSWr.ltl Hnphomoron fiituKhtnr, npetl 17, running around with girls of li-r own ait and older PIN-WORM ITCH THREATEN YOUR CHILD'S HEALTH Dont 1ft yotir WM nfffr alncl nttxHeu mi nut of dlatrcM with I'lii-Worma I Hi-cent mriilval report Weal that an niaulB number of I'httilren (ani) grown up! too) may l vtrtlmt of I'ln-Worma cftn without UMctirtK wlut U wrontr.
