Glycerine, a by-product of soap making, was in short sup ply at the beginning of the war, and needed in tremendous quan tities for ammunition, dynamite, explosives and medicines. Grad ually, however, through making of soap and other war-time sup plies for the army and navy, lend-lease, etc., the glycerine stockpile grew to huge propor tions. Now, due to shortages of in dustrial fats and oils, the gly cerine situation again Is acute, according to DAE. All of which adds up to an other reason for saving used cooking fat, department of agri culture officials says. A.frw . cwa.a Needle . rei X-RAY CAMPAIGN HAS BACKING OF HEALTH-MINDED An enthusiastic reaction from the Jackson county public has greeted the announcement of a mobile X-ray survey for this re gion, Mrs. Dwlght Findlcv. chairman, reported today. Con tracts made by the publicity committee of the Jackson Coun ty aPublle Health association, she explained, have revealed 100 per cent cooperation in plans to promote the drive. This committee is composed of Mrs. Moore Hamilton, Mrs. Claude Thompson and Mrs. Jack Walk er of Medford, and Mrs. James C. Miller of Ashland. They report that the first ad dress of the drive, which will also launch the 1945 Christmas seal, which finances this X-ray survey and all other work to eradicate tuberculosis, will be made by Mrs. Alex Sparrow Fri day afternoon. As treasurer of the Jackson County Public Health associa tion, and member of Its execu tive board for many years, Mrs. Sparrow will tell the public just what the Public Health associa tion expects to accomplish through the chest X-ray. Second speaker In the cam paign will be Dr. R. E. Poston of Ashland, president of the Jackson County Medical society. He will tell why the Medical society favors the mass X-ray program. Other speakers are being lin ed up for appearances before! numerous organizations and ; groups within the next two weeks. Bake in hot oven (460 F.) for 15 minutes; reduce to moderate oven (360 F.) and bake 45 minutes longer. Make meringue with egg whites and 6 tbsps. sugar. Measure milk into cup and add enough shortening to bring it to the 1-cup mark. Pour milk and shortening into bowl containing the flour; add unbeaten egg and flav oring. Beat with rotary beater for 1 minute, or until batter is smooth. Add cherries and nut meats; mix. Pour into well -greased cake pan (8 x 8 x 2.
