en Early, former White House
secretary, said today.
Speaking at a San Francisco
advertising club luncheon, Early
visualized huge shipments of
supplies to China, Asia and the
Philippines through Pacific
coast ports. Early Is vice presi
dent of Pullman, Inc., of Chi

"In the post war decade, as
the nation's great gateway to
the Pacific, you will have In
portant responsibilities," Early
told San Franciscans.
"China has indicated to our
government that to rehabilitate
its war ravaged areas and to
take care of other immediate
requirements it must have ship
ments and credits amounting to
$350,000,000,000. On top of that
its long delayed program of in
dustrial modernization will
spend almost another billion.
Railroads will take an Im
portant part In transporting
materials and personnel to the
Pacific coast for dispatch to the
Orient, Earljr said.
Innoratloni Noted
In pointing out thnt railroads
expect to compete with airlines
and bus routes, Early described
the many Innovations in dining,
recreation cars and coaches.
"Some observers may get
distorted picture of what the
prospects are for rail passenger
traffic In these post war years
because of the almost fabulous
predictions being broadcast re
garding aviation," Early con
tinued. "Yet, as we have seen In the
past, rapid strides In one branch
of transportation do not neces
sarily mean a decline in business
for another," he added.

Cannot Import Oils

structed, workers recruited, and
shipping available to bring the
processed oil back to this coun
try.
Now that meat Is more plenti
ful, women are urged to inten
sify their used fat salvage
scrape skillets, render table
scraps and raw fat cut from meat
before cooking, skim soups and
water in which frankfurters
have been cooked. Every drop
counts now, and every pound is
worth four cents and four points
when turned over to the meat
dealer.

ing highly interesting.

for a few days. .

nomics, department of agricul
ture, which points out that there

Glycerine, a by-product of
soap making, was in short sup
ply at the beginning of the war,
and needed in tremendous quan
tities for ammunition, dynamite,
explosives and medicines. Grad
ually, however, through making
of soap and other war-time sup
plies for the army and navy,
lend-lease, etc., the glycerine
stockpile grew to huge propor
tions. Now, due to shortages of in
dustrial fats and oils, the gly
cerine situation again Is acute,
according to DAE.
All of which adds up to an
other reason for saving used
cooking fat, department of agri
culture officials says. FuU and
oils, glycerine and other by-pio-ducts
which come from them,
go into practically everything
that la manufactured. To hetp

have gone without during the

An enthusiastic reaction from
the Jackson county public has
greeted the announcement of a
mobile X-ray survey for this re
gion, Mrs. Dwlght Findlcv.
chairman, reported today. Con
tracts made by the publicity
committee of the Jackson Coun
ty aPublle Health association,
she explained, have revealed
100 per cent cooperation in
plans to promote the drive. This
committee is composed of Mrs.
Moore Hamilton, Mrs. Claude
Thompson and Mrs. Jack Walk
er of Medford, and Mrs. James
C. Miller of Ashland.
They report that the first ad
dress of the drive, which will
also launch the 1945 Christmas
seal, which finances this X-ray
survey and all other work to
eradicate tuberculosis, will be
made by Mrs. Alex Sparrow Fri
day afternoon.
As treasurer of the Jackson
County Public Health associa
tion, and member of Its execu
tive board for many years, Mrs.
Sparrow will tell the public just
what the Public Health associa
tion expects to accomplish
through the chest X-ray.
Second speaker In the cam
paign will be Dr. R. E. Poston
of Ashland, president of the
Jackson County Medical society.
He will tell why the Medical
society favors the mass X-ray
program.

To your standard pastry recipe add 1 to 1V4 table
spoons of grated orange or lemon rind to the flour
and shortening mistv. (Part orange or lemon
juice may be used for the liquid.) .
Or you might like a change from Pumpkin Pie to
Sweet Potato Pie. Here is my favorite recipe:

Unbaked pastry eheM

potatoes
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tip. mace
Vi tap. eelt

Boil potatoes in jackets, peel; mash and rrraasur.
Separate eggs, beat yolks until light; add sugar
mixed with mace and salt. Combine with sweet
potatoes; add milk, orange juice, lemon juice,
orange rind and batter. Place in unbaked pie
shell. Bake in hot oven (460 F.) for 15 minutes;
reduce to moderate oven (360 F.) and bake 45
minutes longer. Make meringue with egg whites
and 6 tbsps. sugar. Spread roughly on top of pie;
return to oven; bake in moderate oven (350 F.)
15 minutes. Makes 1 9-inch pra.

Sift and measure Hoar, sift with baking powder,
salt and sugar into large bowl. Measure milk into
cup and add enough shortening to bring it to the
1-cup mark. Pour milk and shortening into bowl
containing the flour; add unbeaten egg and flav
oring. Beat with rotary beater for 1 minute, or
until batter is smooth. Add cherries and nut
meats; mix. Pour into well -greased cake pan
(8 x 8 x 2. Bake in moderate oven (350 F.) 25
minutes, or until done. Serve hot with your favor
ite sauce. Serves 8 to 10
