Date.. Dear.. Returning servicemen, foot ball, weddings and engagements, and the approach of Hallowe'en and Armistice Day have been the topics of the week. The younger set already have planned their Hallowe'en fun and frolics while the older folk are looking for ward to a holiday Nov. 12, this being set as the day of the tra ditional Armistice Day celebra tion since Nov. 11 falls on Sun day this year. Every train, plane and bus has its quota of young men and women returning from war duties. Among those recently ar rived were Gordon Warner, who has been discharged after serv ing three and one-half years Rev. Harold Sutherland, petty of ficer in the Seabees, is home after 15 months in England. Others home after beirtg re leased from service are TSgt. Herbert Guenther, who was sta tioned 31 months in a ferrying base in Florida; Albert Thomp son, who served 38 months with the third fleet in the Pacific; ! former SSgt. Clarence A. Neat- hamer, in the air corps three and one-half years; Bruce Norris, in the Pacific with the navy for 27 months; Chester E. Carter, who served 42 months and particl ; pated in the European campaign; R. A. Morgan, former sergeant with the fifth air force and over seas 30 months and William Spencer, fn the army air corps for more than five years. Capt. Albert Busby has re- enlisted as a first sergeant in the medical corps. Pfc. Stanley Kunzman, now In Czechoslovakia, is writing sports for the "Attack," newspaper of the 94th Division and Pfc. Ar thur L. Satterlee, now stationed in Germany, recently wrote to say that he had been to London to visit his great-uncle. Satterlee participated in the Sicilian and Italian campaigns. TSgt. Houston Pitts' last let ter home told of his experiences during the recent typhoons on Okinawa. The sergeant, who has been in India, said he didn't know whether he was headed for home or for Japan. Also on Oki nawa Is Roger Card, CM 3c in the Seabees, who arrived just in time to experience the typhoon. Comments on the Philippine is lands have come from Pvt. Shar on Wight, who recently arrived there, the sergeant writing that his outfit was the first to arrive minus guns. From the 96th divi sion comes word that Cpl. John C. Snook has been awarded a citation for meritorious achieve ment In connection with opera tions on Leyte and Okinawa. On Leyte the corporal served as a cargo truck driver and on Oki nawa he was first battalion transportation corporal. The dis tinguished flying cross, awarded j posthumously to TSgt. Harold M. Thompson, was recently pre sented to his parents by an of ficer from the Mcdford air base. Weddings announced this week were Beryl Flynn to Fjrst Sgt. Eugene Birk; Lilly Belle Cascbolt to Don F. The engagements of Beverly Watson to M. E. Vanderlinden of Appleton, Wis., and Hazel Davis to Lt. Tommy White, have been announced. Medford high's football team ran their season score up to 249, compared to their opponents' seven, when they scored almost at will to chalk up a 51 to 0 victory over Klamath Falls at Modoc Field last Friday night. Medford made 23 first downs to Klamath's three and accumulat ed a total of 564 net yards to the' Pelican's mere 53. The Black Tornado goes against Grants Pass on the Cave men's turf tonight in a game that should practically cinch the Southern Oregon title for the Tornado. Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, head of the science education depart ment and personnel coordinator, at Oregon State college, has been appointed president of the South ern Oregon College of Education. Phoenix Grange Phoenix Grange met In regu lar session with better atten dance than usual. There was an interesting discussion on weed control. Lecture hour was lively and informative.
