In some com muniticj n a n r 1 v iwn 'laL'ftWiaAfl thirds of the Dr. Brady school chil dren (aged 5 to 19 years) had the angular stomatitis of ribo flavin (vitamin G or B2) defic iency (don't let these twelve chilling words throw you I'll explain what they mean as soon as I run out of breath) and the follicular conjunctivitis ("granu lated eyelids") and roughened dry skin of vitamin A defic iency. Note that this nutritional de ficiency occurs among children from all types of homes (not Just among the poor, as too minv Wiseacres assume when they hear of malnutrition) .and in an area where, if anywhere in America, sunshine (for vita min D) and fresh fruit . and greens and vegetables (for ribo flavin) should be pionuiui. i wondar what those ever ready experts who ridicule the idea of nutritional deficiency here In America will say about this. The Florida State Board of Health published the findings in Florida Health Notes for May, '45. "Angular stomatitis" Is a characteristic sign of riboflavin deficiency paleness of the lips, particularly at the angles .of the mouth piling up of whitish, macerated tissue there with a pink background, perhaps fis sures or cracks in the natural ROGUE RIVER LODGE Delicious Dinners Cocktail Lounge Dancing Open livery Nllht Escspi Mundays Phone rrall 1401 Chalker't Motel & Lodge OFFICERS' CLUB DIne-Dance-Refreshments Chicken and Steak Dinners Mnit unltiue lUce in Su Ore. The man, a well-known ex plorer and geographer, tells how he found those strange methods In far-off and mysterious Tibet, often called the land of miracles by the few travelers permitted to visit it. He discloses how he learned tho rare wisdom and long hidden practices, closely guarded for three thousand years by the sages, which en abled many to perform amazing feats. The lining of eyelids appears "granulated". There are usually considerable . Itching, burning, photouhobia (fear of or dislike of bright light) and a sensation as tho there were sand or cind ers In the eves. These are the typical manifes tations of riboflavin (vitamin o or B2) deficiency, but probably in every Instance there are de ficiencies of other B-complex vitamins as well, since ribofla vin never occurs In any rood without the other vitamins of without the other vitamins of the B complex. So far preven tion or cure of angular stomati tis (sometimes called cheilosis or cheilitis, which means abnor mal or sore condition of lips) nndor prevention and cure of granulated eyelids (not to De confused with the red sore eyes of tho contalouB trachoma), in prencpH Intake of the entire vita mln u-complex as this group of vitamin naturally grows in foods such as wheat, beef or calf liver, green leafy vegetables ereen or dried peas, milk, eggs, catmeul or oaten grits, is always preferable to pure riboflavin or pure thiamine imj. The skimpy breakfast so manv people take, if they take break lost at all, and the inade quate breakfast so many school children get if they get break fast at ' all, explains the wide prevalence of these generally unrecognized nutritional defic iency diseases or conditions here in America among all classes of people, rich and poor wiseacre and h.telligent. Talks to follow will deal with the adequate breakfast. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Hernia Recurred Submitted to operation for hernia six venre o. Now It hue returned.
