Marshall, Sr.. of Oswego, Ore arrived in Medford Sunday and is a guest at the home of Postmas ter Frank DeSouza and Mrs. De Souza, 30 Western avenue. r Lieutenant Home Lt. R. E. Watson, USNR, has arrived in Medford from Treasure Island, San Francisco, on terminal leave and upon expiration of his leave will remain here on inactive duty. He is at the family home, 322 South Riverside avenue. Lt. Watson was on active duty for three years. In Hospital Phillip Todd, 15, son of Jesse Todd, 603 North Fir street, was taken to Community hospital in a Conger-Morris am bulance about 10 o'clock last night for treatment of injuries sustained In a bicycle accident on Third and Bartlett streets, city police reported today. The boy collided with a parked car tirhilA rirlinff his hicvrlp hsek- wards and suffered head in juries, the report stated. Todd is reported in an improved con dition today. DR. A. R. In the year 1940 the death rate from alcoholism was 1.9 per 100,000 population. This rate was nearly twice that of 1920. Aside from the deaths at tributed to alcoholism, the death rate from conditions arising from the use of alcohol is great. Many who would otherwise have advanced in their calling have been forced to lag behind be cause of their use of alcohol. The happiness of families has been wrecked by its use, and the lives of children have been mar red and their growth stunted. Today the one safeguard to the Innocense of childhood and na tional security is breaking down. The purity of womanhood is lowering itself to the imbibing cup. Who should arise to the protective defense of the rights of innocent childhood? Calls From England Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hull, 517 South Grape street, received a phor.e call Friday evening from their son, TSgt. Danny Hull, who was spending a week's furlough in London. Sgt. Hull is stationed with the 166th General hospital in Le Havre, France, and expects to arrive in the United States within the next few months. Discharged From Navy John L. Isenhower arrived in the val ley Friday following an honor able discharge from the navy and is visiting at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Cecil Harcourt, Brit ain's military governor of Hong Kong, assured the captured Jap anese garrison today that they would get a full dose of toil, sweat and tears until they have cleaned up the mess they made of this once-flourishing British colony. Harcourt set the Japanese to work cleaning the streets of their own prison camps and re storing plumbing facilities in the city's public buildings, and he told a press conference they would keep at it until the Job is done.
