THE PYORRHEA SPECIALIST An Instructor In a dental col lege, recognized as a leader In hsi field by dentists and phy sicians aime, participa ting in a sympos ium held by the local medi cal and dental societies, cau tioned dentists about prescrib ing diets or dietary supple ments for their patients, lest they lay them- Dr. Brady selves open to the charge of practicing medi cine without a license. That quibble, coming from a representative member of the profession, indicates what is wrong with American dentistry, in my one-horse country doctor opinion, namely, inferiority con plex. For all the pretensions of the dentists they themselves afe painfully conscious that after all they are not doctors. The remedy for this sad complex is now at hand, but it will take another ten years or so to begin to show an effect students who plan to practice dentistry are now re quired to take the full course in medicine first, and then what ever special or technical training may be further required to qual ify the M.D. to practice dentist ry. '43,) becomes carried away by his enthusiasm for the role of "specialist" and oraculatcs or talks down to us ordinary doc tors and dentists thus: "Genuin pyorrhea without a gingival pocket does not exist." Implying, you see, that when we ordinary doctors or dentists fool around with what we Imagine Is pyor rhea the chances are It is not gen uine pyorrhea if you want to be sure you have the genuine thing you had better disregard these doctors and dentists around here and go straight to a special ist. Gingival pocket, my eye. Any dentist or doctor who knows the difference between pyorrhea and giant hives must see numerous cases of pyorrhea without gingi val pocket or pockets, and It Is absurd for any "specialist to say these are not "genuine. It is only fair to quote the au thor s statement more fully: "Genuine pyorrhea without a gingival pocket docs not exist. Furthermore, a pyorrhea pock et without pus does not exist). A gingival pocket Is, therefore, a necessary accompaniment of pyorrhea. The pocket results as a sequence of alveolar atro phy. It has therefore been said that alveolur atrophy causes pyorrhea. (Alveolar atrophy means wasting of the tooth sockets bone, gum and all). But what causes alveolar atrophy? The answer lies in the causes enumerated above. (H e r e d i t ary predisposition, such systematic diseases as malnutrition, diabetes, gout, the presence of salivary calcu lus, trauma by uneven Impact of the teeth during mastica tion, mechanical irritation by overhanging fillings, ill-fitting dental restorations, etc.) The alveolar atrophy is the first tage . . . followed by pocket formation and suppuration."
