Sep. 12, 1945 L L By Earl Jotsy County 4-H Agent Lulu Map Cahail of the Ante lope Beet Club was hifih scoring individual at the annual Jackson county 4H club livestock judging tour held September 8. Lulu Mac scored 676 from a possible score of 700. Following close in sec ond place was Bernice Bifiham, also of Antelope Bcrf Club, with 672. Allene Owens of Valley view placed third with 668 points. Antelope Beef Club also had the winning team consisting of Lulu Mae Cahail, Bernice Big ham and Clara Mae Bigham. Eagle Point Dairy Club placed second. The team consists of Wavne Russell, Helen Harnlsh and Florence Russell. The third place team includes members of the Valleyviow uccr liud lene Owens, Wayne Lcmley and Glenn Williams. Classes of dairy cattle were nrovlded by Leonard Freeman of Central Point, E. B. Poyer of Ashland. A class of Hereford bulls and a class of Hereford heifers were Judged at the G. E. Pierce ranch, Medford. Dale Franklin. Medford, provided class of Hampshire ewes and C. P. Gassoway of Ashland provid ed a class of Duroc hogs. The club members placed each of these classes and gave reasons for their placings on one class. Official Judge of the event was Jens Svlnth, county agent from Josephine county. Pendleton Greets Crowds Swarming To Annual Roundup Pendleton, Ore., Sept. 12 (U.P) All of the wild freedom of the old west, overlaid with Its typical film of grime and glam our, was present today at Pen dleton as the city opened Its 34 th annual roundup. Local hotel keepers, restaur anteurs and round-up officials estimated, that opening day crows tripled the average amount with local townsfolk going "all out" to entertain the thousands temporarily housed In a city which boasts a population of some 0,000. Entries for tho $10,800 In prize money wero running about 13 per cent heavier than In pre vious yean. Events scheduled for today's round-up show were steer roping, calf roping, uull dogglng and brone riding. Orphans Score. 3-2 Victory In Upset Of Community Club Biggest upset of the girls soft ball league occurred at the high school field last night when the Orphans scored a run In the final inning to give the Girls Com munity club their first setback of the season and a 3-2 victory. The win gave the Orphans the second half championship. The two teams meet Thursday night, at 6:45, to determine the league Winner. L. Damon reached first bate on an error, went to second on an overthrow at first, and scored the winning count when Louise Edmonds, a pinch-hitter, hit one through second base. Rationing Boards Due For Reduction Local war price and rationing boards in the Portland OPA dis trict will be reduced from 83 to 65 area price boards by the end of September Harry E. Hcarnc, assisting OPA board executive, announced today. Medford is not to be affected, according to the statement. Reorganization and consolida tion will continue after Septem ber until January 1 when it is anticipated the 65 boards will be reduced about one-half. With gradual termination of rationing programs, the local boards will concentrate largely on price con trol during the coming year in an effort to head off the infla tion which followed the last war, Hearne said. LOCAL OFFICER E C a p t. Rolland Rinabarger, Medford, and fellow officers at the Marine Corps Air station, Santa Barbara, Calif., have gone "in training" in preparation for a reunion with Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, famous ma rine corps ace recently released from a Japanese prison camp ac cording to a recent story in The Beam, station news sheet. Special plans are being made for the happy reunion because Major Boylngton had told his I Medford high school and Oregon ; sponsored by the State Society, Black Sheep" squadron: "The Japs will never kill me. You may give me up for dead, but six months after the war 111 meet you boys in the San Diego Tavern." The Beam continued by saying "As news of his dra matic release from a Japanese prison camp fills the front pages, it looks as if "Pappy" Boying ton will be keeping his promise, and two of his boys, Maj. Stanley R. Bailey, group operations offic er and Capt Rolland Rinabarger, operations officer of the Hanger Mo. 2 fighter squadron, are going into training for the reunion The article quotes Capt. Rina barger as saying 'lots of the boys just couldn't imagine old Pappy' dead." Capt. Rinabarger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rinabarger. formerly of Medford and now of Roseburg and graduated from State college before entering the marine corps. He recently re turned to this country after ex tended duty overseas. Historical Society Would Aid Museum Project In County Lancaster Pollard, superin tendent, from the State Histori cal Society of Oregon, headquar ters in Portland, has arrived in Medford to aid in organization of an Historical Society in Jack son county and to help promote a program already begun by the Sons and Daughters of the Amer ican Revolution to establish an historical museum in the old county court house in Jackson ville. Also to be used as an historical monument in Jacksonville, and is the Beekman bank building, first banking institution in the state, Mr. Pollard stated, with maintenance work and supervis ion to be conducted to a county society, when formed. Los Angeles, Sept. 12 U.R Slight, 19-year-old Doris Derr was in jail today charged with purst snatching, and two rugged policemen were recovering from the battle she put up against arrest. After allegedly taking a purse from schoolteacher Pansy M. Fitzslmmons, Mrs. Derr fought the two policemen almost to a standstill.
