Australia's Foreign Minister Releases Report On Jap Treatment of Captives London, Sept. 12 (UP.) For eign Minister Dr. Herbert Evatt of Australia demanded today that "superior officers up to the highest" presumably including Emperor Hirohito and the imper ial general staff be punished for Japanese barbarity in the Southwest Pacific. He made the demand in re leasing Australia's official re port to the United Nations War Crimes Commission on Japanese cannibalism and tortures in the Australian war zone. Cannabalism Charged The report charged: 1. Japanese soldiers ate flesh from their own and American and Australian dead in New Guinea following the Buna China campaign in 1942-3. 2. 150 Australians who sur rendered under a white flag in New Britain were shot or bayon etted to death, a few at a time in the presence of those still to die. 3. Two Roman Catholic priests, one a Dutchman and the other an American, and two Catholic nuns were bayonetted to death in a New Britain village about Aug. 19, 1942. The bodies of the nuns were naked when found. 4. Two American prisoners were dissected and their livers removed while they were still alive in the Kokumbona area of Guadalcanal in the latter part of September 1942. No Humanity 5. Japanese troops killed up to 59 natives and 36 Australian soldiers without justification or excuse at Milne Bay, New Guin ea, in 1942. Many, including women natives, were subjected to frightful multilation and some were used for bayonette prac tice while they still were alive. Evatt said the report, taken in conjunction with the American statement on atrocities released last week, strengthened "the confirmed policy of the Austral ian government . . , that there should be no immunity for trial for war crimes for any Japanese whatsoever." Australia has informed the war crimes commission that it desires machinery be set in mo tion immediately for the trial of Japanese war criminals, Evatt said. . He said the Australian report was based on the testimony of 500 witnesses and was prepared by Justice Webb, chief justice of Queensland for the war crimes commission. In Mishap Dean De Berry, 522 Crater Lake avenue, was slightly injured yesterday eve ning when the bicycle he was operating went to pieces at the intersection of Main street and Riverside avenue, city police re ported today. Son Born A son was born the morning of Sept. 10 to Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Klein, formerly of Medford and now of Port land. The infant weighed nine pounds and three ounces and has been named Ronald Charles. Mrs. Klein is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. Brommcr, 821 Minnesota avenue. Returns Mrs. Laura Albertz, 236 South Central avenue, re turned yesterday from Fresno, Calif., where she spent the past eleven days with Mr. and Mrs. Eino Hemmila and family. Mr. Hemmila, former manager of the local theaters, returned with Mrs. Albertz and will resume duties as manager of the Grants Pass theaters. Council To Meet Townsend District council will meet Sun day, Sept. 16, at the K. of P. hall with the session opening at nine o'clock, members state. A potluck dinner will be served at 12:30 o'clock. Women Slay Bear With Small Rifle Armed only with a .22 rifle, Mrs. Audrey Gabriel and her sister, Mrs. Gertrude Krichcsky, killed a large black bear near their home at Drew recently. Mrs. James, 333- East Jackson street, reports that Mrs. Gabriel shot once at the animal, the bul let lodging behind the ear, and that Mrs. Krichesy dashed to the house for a butcher knife with which she completed the job of extermination. The two women photographed the animal, after which it was dressed and the meat placed in cold storage. BURGLARY FACTORY Hollywood, Sept. 12 (U.R) A complete "burglary factory" was seized today by detectives Frank- Warren and Bob Ilodgin when they arrested Joe Mat thews for robbing the wallet of Irwin Krebs. Included in the "factory" was everything from sledgehammers to a complete key-cutting machine, bolt cut ters, more t nan one hundred other tools, two sawed-off shot guns, revolvers and automatics in shoulder holsters.
