Ray Mann, husband of Mrs. June Mann, of Central Point, Oregon and son of. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mann, of Central Point, has Just received the Oak Leaf Cluster to the. Purple Heart having been wounded three times In the Luzon campaign. Pvt. Mann Joined the 149th Infantry, unit of the famed 38th Infantry Division known as the "Avengers of Bataan," short ly after the second invasion of Luzon, and Just before the tri umphant march down the Ba taan peninsula avenging the Death March of 1942. Pvt. Mann, a rifleman, has re covered from his wounds and returned to his company' for duty. Mann entered the army July 14. 1942, at Medford, Ore. and embarked for overseas service Dec. 13, 1944, and landed with a replacement detachment for the 38th Division on Luzon. Prior to Induction In the army Pvt. Manp was employed by the Skeetcr Logging Co. at Medford. He is entitled to wear in addi tion to the Purple Heart and Oak Cluster, the Asiatic Pacific Rib bon with one bronze battle star, the Philippine Liberation Rib bon, and the Combat Infantry badge. Lt. Col. Charles Thomas HQ.. 41st Division. Philip pines Lt. Col. Charles M. Tho mas, of Medford, a member of the general staff of the famed 41st Infantry Division, has been awarded the Onk Leaf Cluster to a previously won Bronze Star Medal for conspicuous achieve ments on the field of battle. Thomas graduated from Med ford high school in 1930 and took a law degree from the Uni versity of Oregon. Pvt. Lee Bumgardner With U. S. Forces In France Private Lee H. Bumgardner. whose wife, Fern L., lives In Medford, Oregon, was awarded a Silver Star Medal for outstand ing gallantry in action. Pvt. Bumgardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernal M. Bumgardner of Medford, was Inducted in Jan uary, 1944, and went to England in July of that year as a replace ment. He went Into action with the 702nd on September IS dur ing the drive for Nancy. After the action at Heldersheld, during the Belgium campaign, he was evacuated to England where he Friday. Albert Espey An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England The promo tion of Albert N. Espey, 29, of 1005 North Riverside, Medford, from second lieutenant to first lieutenant has been announced at this station. Lt. Espey, co-pllot of a B-17 Flying Fortress, Is the husband of Mrs. Margaret V. Espey. The airman graduated from Grants Pass high school and prior to entering the service in February, 1943, was employed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corp. at Bur bank, Cal. ' S-Sgt. Everett Hoffman Tonopah, Nev. Tonopah Army Air Field, only Fourth Air Force B-24 combat crew -train Ine sta tion In Nevada recently complet ed more than 80,000 flying hours (more than 10 million miles of flying) without a fatal aircraft accident. The former Fourth Air Force record of 33,900 hours was set by March Field, California, but eclipsed by Tonopah's air men on April 4th of this year. Sparks, Med ford, was awarded the bronze star for heroic achievement in connection with military opera tions on raiawan, Philippine Is lands, March 3, 1045. "When his platoon leader was pinned down by intense encmv fire, Sgt. Sparks immediately as sumed command preventing a possible disorderly withdrawal as new men were temporarily upset by the heavy attack. Corcoran and his crewmates are veterans of the Philippines Iwo and Okinawa and are cur rently waiting at their base for assignment to a new mission. Thomas Gerety Aboard a Light Aircraft Car rier in the Pacific Thomas H. Gerety, 19, aviation ordnance man, third class, is flying as a combat aircrewman and turret gunner with a torpedo bomber squadron operating off this ship. His parents. Mr. and Mrs. r. M, Gerety, live at 120 South New town street, Medford, Ore. Gerety joined the navy May, 1943, and trained at Memphis, Tenn., Miami, Fla., San Diego, Calif., and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. SSgt. Frank Brown SSgt. Frank R. Brown, of Brownsboro, Ore., has reported for duty at the Air Technical Service Command, Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, and has been as signed to the 4000 AAF, Base Unit, Wright Field Is the air forces' engineering, procure ment,, maintenance and supply center. German Magnates Planned to Rearm Senator Charges Washington, June 22 (U.R) Sensational charges were made today that German industrialists have prepared detailed plans to rearm Germany and finance Nazi party underground acti ties. The charges, based on hither to secret documents, were made by Sen. Harley M. Kllgore, D., W. Va who recently returned from Germany. Kllgore aimed his accusation principally at leaders in German industrial cartels. "Masquerading as 'neutral businessmen without political al legiance they have already con ceived vicious plans for a third BttemDt at world conquest," ne declared. t .
