They jammed the highways In long columns, on trucks, carts pulled by horses, and on foot. At night they slept under hedges or bridges, or, in barns or farmhouses where they begged shelter. " Once 1,700 refugees took pos session of train in the Weimar freight yard and refused to budge. The army finally decid ed after three days the only way to solve the problem was to hitch an engine to the train and take it to Frankfurt.
