It occurs wherever people are unwise about their eat ing and drink ing and care less about their digestion, par ticularly that part of diges tion that goes on (a) In the mouth during m a 1 1 cation and (b) In the stomach for Dr. Brady half an hour or more after the food Is swallowed - if the food has been well chewed. Come to think of it, that is the only part of the entire digestive , process over which one has any control. All the more reason why very one who values health, vlte and long life should keep ALL TEETH In good working or der at all times and all the time his own teeth or his dentist's, that is immaterial so long as the teeth function efficiently. The trouble I call Yankee stomach Is a functional derange ment, at least In the majority of cases, characterized by hypera cidity, hunger pain, heartburn, acid eructations (waterbrash), uneasiness from fulness after eating, bloating by gas, and gen eral crankiness, impatience and Irritability engendered by these discomforts. One with Yankee stomach had better abstain from alcohol and tobacco or at most smoke only after the midday or evening meal, eat regularly and five or six light meals a day rather than the ordinary three meals a day, take plenty of time to cat and never indulge in quick lunches, never eat when under tension or excitement, never take des sert or concentrated sweets, sit ' quietly at rest or lie down for a brief nap after eating whenever possible, avoid acetylsallcylic acid ("aspirin") which aggra vates acidity. It is risky business following a rigid or formal diet for weeks or months without benfit of assay of the adequacy of the diet to supply the essentials of nutrition. These are the only suggestions I have to offer one with Yankee stomach: 1. Omit nothing from your diet if the Item has not certainly given you trouble on one or more previous occasions. 2. As a rule milk and egg, raw or cooked as you like, are agreeable foods, either or both together taking up or combining with excess acid and supplying the essentials of good nutrition. If you wish it Is all right to take a tablespoonful or two of lime water with each glass of milk Make your own lime water by putting piece of unslaked lime size of a walnut In crock or Jar of water (a quart), let stand till sediment settles, pour off clear upper fluid that is lime water Lime water contains actually less lime (calcium) than milk Itself contains, ounce for ounce. 3. Replace all items made of refined white flour or containing It with items made of whole wheat, and keep a supply of plain wheat on hand and chew a handful every day as you would chew gum. In lieu of us ing whole wheat instead of re fined white flour, supplement your diet with a dally ration of vitamin B-complex. 4, If you cannot take oranges or other citrus fruits or their juices, or fresh or factory (va cuum process) canned tomato or tomato Juice, or fresh greens and fresh raw or slightly cooked veg etables, you must get your dally ration of vitamin C in a tablet or other concentrated form of -pure vitamin C cevitamic acid. POLICY OF OPA SAID CAUSE OF MEAT SHORTAGE Washington, March 15 flJ.B Spokesmen for slaughterers and meat packers today agreed, in separate appearances before con gressional committees, that fed eral price and production policies threaten military as well as civilian meat supplies. u. L. Childress. Houston. Tex speaking for the American Meat institute, told the senate banking committee of the plight of pack. ers. A separate group of con gressmen and government offic ials heard representatives of the National Meat Industry council tell of their troubles with OPA. Childress said packers warned the government more than a year ago that its policies would discourage "production of ade quate supplies of pork and other meats." This," he said, "Is exactly what has come about. Childress, general manager of the Houston Packing company, said ' the meat isn't here because the packing Industry is not get ting the hogs." He said the government first encouraged hog production and then in 1943 discouraged it, bringing about a little over a year ago ' the greatest decline in hog production in one year in history." Other factors in the meat shortage, Childress said, include failure of the OPA to kill off the meat black market and in ability of packers to make a profit under present price policies. FOR PAPER DRIVE Scoutmasters and Senior Pa trol leaders of the Medford dis trict met last week with Robert Duff, Jackson county salvage chairman, to work out details for the Boy Scout paper cam paign to end April 30. This will be known as the "General Elsen hower Paper Campaign." Scouts of the nation have been asked to stage- a whirlwind drive to bring in 150,000 tons of paper. General Elsenhower has au thorized the War Production Board to present two types of awaras, lii his behalf, for out standing w ork in the campaign.
