FOUB MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUHS " Monday. March 8, 1945 Your Health and Its Care By DR. WU UAM BRADY M. D. Readers thould aidreas inquiries toi Dr. William Brady ...... 263 1 Camlno Barerly H11U. Calii. CAPACITY OF THE STOMACH Size of the ' stomach varies greatly in different individuals, but the average dimensions are from 10 to iz inches In length and inches in trans verse diameter at a b o u t the middle, and the capacity of the normal stom ach is approxl eV mately ' 3VS pints or slight ly less than hall a Ballon Dr. Brady Tnlg does not mean that a normal person can drink three pints of water or other liquid at one sitting, but merely that the stomach can hold that quantity without disconv fort. . .;; . .,'.,.;. ' A frequent question Is whether the stomach can "shrink" or " ex pand," that Is, whether the size of the stomach determines ttie individual snppetlte or the amount of food the Individual must take in order , to feel satis fied. , .,' i The answer Is yes, In a way The stomach - doesn't 'actually ."shrink" or dilate -in healthy person, but being a. muscular or gan, a widened place along the alimentary canal, It changes con siderably' in capacity or size from moment to moment,- during digestion of food. It is a mistake to think of the stomach aa a receptacle of the conventional ized shape depicted, in the alma nacs, and the sucker bait of "st ray" quacks. Nearer the truth to think of it aa a widened place In the food tube. Every twenty seconds or so, during digestion, peristaltic or contractions or waves pass leisurely from about the middle on to the lower out let (pylorus) of the stomach, and this change in shape and capac ity propels food toward the py lorus or, when part of the food is sufficiently digested; ejects it through the pylorus into the up per - portion of the intestine (duodenum) where tit Is further digested by the pancreatic juice and the bile. Of course this peris taltic movement, wave or con traction is automatic, goes on independently of the conscious- ness, will or sensation or feeling1 NOTICE Or MEETING In the County Court of the State of Oregon in and for Jackson County. f Jackson County Ctasing Board In' the Matter of the Change of rthe Boundary of, the PILOT ROCK GRAZING DISTRICT of Jackson County, Oregon. . ' On the other hand, if the stomach has poor tone. It is comparatively flabby and It takes more food to "fill" It, although this is not lit erally true, for there Is never any empty space in the stomach. Deficiency of vitamin B-com-plex, particularly B-l (thiamine) impairs this muscle tone. In creased Intake of B-complex im proves . muscle tone throughout the body.
