Looked In on the Municipal Court yesterday to see hew the' defense is doing In that Follies esse. The court ruled out com Darative drama and literature, so excerpts from "Tobacco Road," "Girl From the Osarks," "Honey "Forever Amber and the Bible were ruled out. Learned counsel felt very dejected, Attorney Bourne, the long haired jury plead er of the defense trio, declaring to the august court it was like "a kick in the seat of the pants." In desperation the defense decided to put on some excerpts from the show which was closed up December last, to prove that everything was not rotten in this particular dramatic Den mark, the performance as a whole in fact being designed only to divert the doughboys home from the front as well as raise army moralel Whereupon Miss Dee, one of the cast, with a voice somewhat resembling In tonal quality a of a tree, rendered ditty entitled "the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which she solemnly swore was rendered exactly as it was rendered during the 1944 holiday week. This was followed by the roBUST tenor of the cast (accent on the bust) one Eduard DeWitt, who pointed out that he per formed for year at the "Buzz Buzz" night club in Toledo and also at the local. Burbank "thee-ater" where he was a well known popular favorite, his offering bearing the title of "Hail to the Gold-Star Mother." There was no doubt of the robustness when Eduard really lat himself go In the little court sob. it fairly made the windows rattle, though one was more inclined to nang onto ms seat than reach for his pocket handkerchief. When asked by counsel If that was the way ha sang at the performance in question Eduard replied proudly it was. Judging the performance in Follies could naroiy nave Deen for both Eduard and Miss-Dee flannel shirt, the latter with the popular mollasses-candy-bronze-tinted hair-do took themselves with intense earnestness and sol emnity, Eduard being practically out on his feet as a result of emotional strain when he finished his tribute to the bereaved war mothers. The defense then put on a "The Doctor's Office" in which Dee and Eduard participated,- all deleted nor altered it was put Follies were raided. Although this example was there was again no sign of enjoyment on the part of the cast, solemnity and dejection again being the keynote of the per formers, althought the piece-de-resistance was a clinical examina tion in the G. U. department. One woman on the jury was amused she Is a young and buxom blonde and the hope of the defense we imagine and one old man among the spectators burst into loud guffaw which drew stern admonition from the court bailiff. Otherwise there were no on the calm surface of the assembled mutltude, as result of. the effort. It is matter of no great Importance, of course, but it would be Interesting to know why this cheap performance by group of third rate actors end actorines should have been closed up, while the night clubs and floor shows of this amazing and de cadent metropolis continue uncensored and unchecked. It Is a fairly safe wager that someone neglected to pay someone else What someone else requested or expected. These examples of entertainment from the raided FolUes only increased your correspondent's sympathy for these poor gals try ing to earn an honest living, but the boss and the men In the cast for such as they, well they should get "life" or be sent to aid the G. It Is amusing to see how Father Divine with all his glib talk evades trouble. MOVE TO LEGALIZE NATIONAL STRIKE Washington. Feb. 28 (U.R) The United Mine Workers to day took action which would enable them legally to call a strike in the nation's bituminous coal mines. They did so by formally no tifying three federal agencies that they consider a dispute ex ists with the operators "within the meaning of the Smith-Con-nally act." This act set up ma chinery for' taking strike votes after 30-day "codling off" pe riod. The action was ordered by a unanimous vote of the UMW's wage policy committee at the opening session of three-day meeting here. The union will start negotiations on Thursday for a new two-year contract with soft coal producers to replace an egreemwit which expires at midnight, March 31. The notice that a dispute al ready exists was sent to the war labor board, the national labor relations board, and the labor department. In so doing, the UMW invoked a law which was written as a result of coal strikes two years ago. Gigantic Aircraft Ordered By Panatr For Postwar Runs New York. Flying Bomb Kills "Penniless" Couple London. (U,R) The old. three- story house on Rosehill Road. like a Victorian vignette, hadn't changed a bit since its two occu pants came to live in It 84 years ago. They were Caroline and Ma tilda Newton, spinster sisters, who, untouched by the whirl winds of fashions and customs. (till wore the black dresses that swept the ground and buttoned up to the neck. They lived quietly and with great austerity like many others of their age whose existences are often limited by pitifully small incomes. Last July a flying bomb struck the old house, and Caroline, 86 and Matilda, 83, were both killed. A kindly neighbor, thinking the aged sisters had died penni less, spent $120 on their funerals But when r,escue workers set to work on the debris they found papers showing the spinster sis- ters had over $40,000 in the bank In bonds from the last war. KITCHEN MATCH STOCK PLENTIFUL, SAYS WPB New York (U.R) There Is no "shortage" of matches, al though the familiar paper book and penny-box safeties are miss ing from cigar stands throughout the nation. WPB officials explain that 100 per cent of the penny-box and 35 per cent of the paper-book matches have been earmarked for the military services because of their cargo-space-saving com pactness, but that there are 200 billion old fashioned kltcnen matches available for civilian consumption. This, the officials say, is more than enough for all purposes if smokers will forget the "free" matches they used to receive with cigarette purchases and step around to the grocery store for a box of the big wood en lights. The battle in the house over what to do about the George Bill (the bill to take the RFC and other lending agencies from the control of the secretary of commerce) had an interesting result in an other direction this week. Two bills which probably would not have reached consideration for months suddenly came up Wed nesday and were passed. One bill is known as the insurance bill which gives companies a period of time before being placed definitely under the anti trust 'laws. The other was the Hobbs Bill to review railroad bankruptcy settlements for the purpose of considering the in terests of small stockholders. Action on these bills was di rectly a by-product of the battle by our side of the house (Rep.) to keep the George BUI from coming to the floor- Under a procedure known as 'Calendar Wednesday," which has been dispensed with for some years, any regular committee may call up a bill for action on the floor. The majority lead er decided to use this means of bringing the George BUI out. But he overlooked the fact that the Calendar Wednesday rule also requires that committees be called in a certain order. The committee on judiciary, con trolled by antt-Wallac,e Demo, crats, comes ahead of the bank- lng and currency committee on the list as it is called. When the clerk reached judiciary on the list, the chairman of that com mittee took the floor and called up the Insurance bill, After it was acted upon, he then called up the Hobbs Bill. This con sumed the remainder of the afternoon. Thus the George Bill did not come up for considera tion on Wednesday, The anti-Wallace members of the rules committee finally weak' ened, however, so next day the George Bill came onto the floor with a regular rule. a a a Loans for Veterans. Under the loan provisions of the GI bill passed by the last congress, there have been a total of near ly 6400 applications of veterans filed for eligibility for govern ment guaranty. As veterans return, increasing numbers will be taking advan tage of the loan provisions of veterans legislation. Veterans must first file an application for certificate to establish their eligibility for the loan. When eligibility is established, the loan application may be filed. The Veterans Administration guar antees up to 50 of any loan, but not to exceed a total loan guaranty of $2000. The loan guaranty may be divided up on several different loans if the vet eran so desires. All lending is done by individuals or private agencies who may desire to ex. tend credit to the veteran. If there are any veterans of the present war who desire informa tion, I shall be glad to send them a pamphlet giving ques tions and answers. Applications for pensions by veterans dependents are prac tically swamping the Veterans' Administration at this time. They are receiving from depend ents of World War II veterans approximately 1,000 applications a week, and under the law pass ed late last year making all World War I unremarried wid ows eiigioie tor a pension, an average of 2300 applications i day are reaching the Veterans Administration. a a useful Bulletins.
