NOTABLE ADVANCE Amendments of the New York atate sanltaty code became ef fective Jan. 1, 1949, making the q u a ranune or Isolation re itrlctiona in scarlet fever the same as in septic sore throat, as it has been rec ognized for the past 20 years that scarlet fever and sep tic sore throat are caused by Dr. Brady the same germ or by strains of the streptococcus hemolyticus (h e m o 1 y s 1 s or hemolytic means dissolving or breaking up or destroying red hlood corouscles). This streptococcus hemolyticus Is a wicked, versatile germ, groups or strains of which may cause septic sore throat or scar let fever; other groups may cause erysipelas; and complica tions such as acute inflammation or abscess in the middle ear, acute mastoiditis, endocarditis (inflammation of heart lining), arthritis, peritonitis, pneumonia. The new New York sanitary regulation stipulates that strep tococcic sore throats are to be isolated "until the mucous mem branes of nose and throat appeal normal and all abnormal dis charges from nose.throat ears or suppurating glands (lymph nodes - have ceased" and Isolation in any case shall be for not less than seven days and not more than 90 days. Release from isola tion depends on a negative throat culture and clinical re covery. , Notice that nothing Is f a 1 d about the rash. Too much atten tion has been given the rash- of scarlet fever heretofore that is, It is of little significance wheth er there is a rash or whether It lasts more than a day or two or whether peeling off skin follows or persists there is little if any evidence that scarlet fever or for that matter measles Is or can be spread through mere contact with the rash or the skin desqua mation that usually follows such rashes. Trowbridge, Boston University psychologist, said to day. He believes that names uncon sciously shape their bearers' des tiny. For example, he said, some Percys refuse to accept the aura of timidity suggested by their name and grow into regular fire brands. Other Percys, he added, take the path of least resistance and fall quickly into the groove their name sets for them. The tendency is toward ono extreme or the other. . Three courses deal in home economics: a three hour course in clothing and selection, a three hour course in personal and family relationship, and a three hour course In foods, nutrition and cookery. Another new course consists of two terms as planned, three hours each in industrial arts for elementary schools, viewing the crafts as an expresslonal me dium and giving motivation to other units, serving as an inte grating agency. A two-year curriculum for medical and dental assistants is added to the junior college cur riculum. This course provides, in addition to the basic culture courses, certain ' special skills needed by medical attendants, as receptionist, office manager, and minor assistant to the doctor in duties of his profession. The vocational training of the course to include chemistry and biol ogy, .personal' hygiene, account ing and stenography, and a pe riod of apprenticeship in a doc tor's office. These courses are planned as terminal vocational and semi professional programs, to be a part of the junior college offer ings. They are designed to meet the needs not only of high school graduates but also needs of re hiring war veterans, and those returning to college from war Industries. The new courses will be installed as part of the regu lar college work as soon as fa cilities can be set up, and are planned to be In operation next school year or the following. - Don G. Fredericks Gaina Promotion in Naval Service V. S. Naval Air Station, Hllo, Hawaii, T. H. The Navy De partment announces that Don Gordon Fredericks, now serving at this Naval Air Station, has been advanced from the rating of Aerographer's Mate Third Class to that of Aerographer's Mate Second Class. The advancement came to Fredericks in recognition of out standing faithfulness and skill in performance of duty and com pletion of the course of study prescribed for this new rating. Fredericks is the brother of Mrs. L. J. Bigham, of Route No. 1, Central Point, Oregon. DETERMINED WOMAN Medford, Mass., Feb. 19. (U.R) Mrs. Marjorle Hyde Skillin, 26, believes in stick-to-it-iveness. She left college five years ago to marry. She had three children Yesterday, she was one of 83 awarded degrees at Tufts col lege.
