BUTCH STILL HAS THE CROUP. When I was an honest doctor In Perm Yan one could count on fair number of night calls to treat th croup through out the fall winter and early spring, and each au tumn a num ber of cases of typhoid fever which, at a dol lar a visit All that Is a thing of the past now but I' know I am safe in saying Dr. Brady that typhoid fever has become almost as rare as smallpox, in Penn Yan or any other community of intelligent people. But I also know, now, that I can't speak so confidently of the passing of spasmodic croup. I ventured to express that idea here a year ago, inferring that spasmodic, - catarrhal or simple croup must be pretty rare nowadays because, whereas I formerly received frequent re quests for advice about it, in recent years there had been re markably few requests for In formation or advice about croup. That brought Immediate replies from several mothers who as sured me their children have croup naturally, these moth ers did not ask for my advice, since I had betrayed my ignor ance by saying that perhaps modern Improved diet! nutrition, ventilation etc., and even intelli gence in parents, explained why modern children do not have croup. Now comes Mrs. L. P., who cays her son Butch has croup every little while, although none of her other six children has ever had any sign of it. She asks why. ' ' , Butch may ' mean , well, but nevertheless he puts Ol' Doc Brady In a quandry. Unless Butch has been pampered and coddled more than the other kids or perhaps stinted on some essential of nutrition , such as calcium (In milk, cheese, greens etc.) which the other kids re ceived in adequate amounts. I give up. " , Eight Initiated -In Junior Club Of Honor Degree Eight members were Initiated t the meeting of the Degree of Honor Junior club held Satur day morning at Lincoln school. Taken into the club were Donna Mae, Georgians, Isabel Irene and George Wesley Thomas, Donna Byres, Shirley Mae, Mary Lou and William Marble. Robert Stone was presented his sunshine cap and Marjorle May, Bertha Miller and Carlene Mark their second sunshine stripes. Donna Lee Byres, Shir ley Mae and Etta Belle Marble and Donna Mae Thomas re ceived prizes for bringing guests and Robert Mueller received a game prize. Information on the lives of George Washington and Abra ham Lincoln were given by the children and Mrs. Ida M. Wilson, club director. Refreshments were served with Mariorle May, Linda Lou Mueller and Bertha Miller as sisting Mrs. Wilson. Next meet ing will be March 10. Curry of SOS Benson street, Medford, Ore, received the Driver'a Award for excellent performance of duty In the WAC Medical Detachment at Camp Pickett, Va., where she is assigned as a disnatchpr snrl ambulance driver. A former student at the Uni versity of Oregon, Eugene, Ore., Pfc. Curry enlisted in the Wom an's Army Corps in June 1943.
