IS, 1943 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUOTlflrfl ORGANIZED LABOR 'THREE-WAY' BILL Salem, Ore., Feb. 14 0J.B The proposed "three-way" com pensation bill HB 232) now be fore the Oregon house of repre sentatives, was under heavy criticism from organized labor groups today, and had the ap proval of Insurance and employ er representatives, after a pub lic hearing last night. C. M. Souther, representing the Oregon State Agents associa tion, told the house labor and Industries committee that the bill is drawn directly from the Federal Longshoremens' and Harbor Workers compensation law, which, he said, has had 17 yeara ol very successful opera tion. The bill allows employer! to Insure their employes in threo ways through the state fund, through private carriers, and through self insurance. This Souther said, would free Oregon from the "monopolistic" practice of insuring through only one agency and would make for more efficient and .less expen sive operation ot compensation laws. Observations An army chaplain Just re turned from the Western front says, with a sort of grim sorrow, mere is one horror of war for which the loved ones the men leave behind are directly re sponsible, it makes men lose their minds and become so reck less in battle that they needless ly risk not only their own lives but the lives of those who are with them. All this due to the infidelity of the wives the men said good-bye to when they left to defend the security of their homes. . The chaplain says he has seen a letter turn a happy and cour ageous man into a shaken, stricken semblance of one, bereft of all hope for the future and indifferent to what became of himself or the cause for which he Is fighting. The chap lain rightly rates such Infidelity as worse than the most cruel treatment ever given our men by the enemy. A particularly pathetic story came to me yesterday. A soldier got leave to return to the States, On the day he was to take the plane for home, he received word that his wife was divor cing him. That wife, and the man Involved stabbed that sol dier in the back as surelv as ever a Jap did who sneaked up in me jungles ana sunk the knife through the living heart of a boy. only in the latter case the boy found relief in death but the betrayed soldier has to go on living with that twisting. turning made in his heart a pro longed agony. Too, there Is another case I know about. The lad in the South Pacific suspects not at all that his wife is unfaithful. though every one in the home neighborhood knows this for she doesn't try to hide her in fidelity. Some think he should be told, rather than let him re turn home and discover the sit uation for the first time. Per sonally, I do not think he should be told. There Is the possibility that he will not return. In that case he would be spared a cruel disillusionment.' There simply are no words scornful enough for such treaun ery. The man In the double cross is as much to blame as the wife. Both should be in terned and treated like any other traitor who Is found guil ty of aiding and abetting the enemy. I really believe some measures along this line should be taken. We owe it to the men to defend their homes while they are away defending ours. Let's DO something. Alexandria, La. End Not In Sight In European War Patterson Warns Washington, Feb. 15 U.R Undersecretary of War Robert P. Patterson said today that In the opinion of military leaders "the end of the fighting In Eu rope Is not in sight." He made the statement in urg ing the House Military Affairs committee to approve legisla tion providing for drafting oi nurses. Patterson's assertion gave em phasis to a statement yesterday by War Mobilization Director James F. Byrnes that more men will be in combat next month "than ever before." Byrnes based that remark on plans drawn at the Big Three Crimea confer ence which he attended.
