This time I deserve It I cer tainly pulled a big boner as precious a bit of quackery as I have perpetrated or tried to per petrate on readers, in a long while. Quackery is pretending to have knowledge in a matter of which one knows little or nothing. That's O' Doc Brady, for you. A correspondent who has been receiving pneumothorax treatment for lung tuberculosis Inquired about the wlsdown of having a baby. I might have made the error without arous ing such a protest had I an swered in a paragraph. But.no, when I go Quack I Quack I . I want to be sure ' everybody knows about it so I made the question the subject of the talk published here recently under the title Sorry, No Baby.': I said It would be unwise to have a baby, as the young woman's tuberculosis" "is p r esumably still active, else no further In jections of nitrogen or air would be necessary. She would be al most certain to infect a baby with tuberculosis if she. nursed, cared for or kept the baby with her." , t Weil, I know better now.. Be sides the scores of persons with arrested tuberculosis who still receive pneumothorax treat ment, several physicians were kind enough to enlighten me on this point. For, instance the medical superintendent of - a large tuberculosis hospital In forms me that many patients are discharged from tuberculosis hospitals with apparently arrest ed disease many considered cured yet they carry pneumo- NEEDED BY NAVY, Enlargement of the enlistment program for the radar units of the navy were explained at the last Lions' club meeting by Herb Craln and Bob Stewart, navy re cruiters stationed here, Great stress Is being laid on the high school education foun dation, the men said and de clared that the navy radar courses are equal to three years college engineering courses and are impossible to obtain by civil ians. ' ..Not content with, displaying my Ignorance of the pneumo thorax treatment, I demonstrat ed also my Ignorance of the sig nificance of the tuberculin test, by saying that It would deter mine whether a child has too lit tle, a fair degree or no immun ity against tuberculosis. In fact, a medical colleague In forms me, it Is a test to deter mine whether a person has had a tuberculous Infection at some time or other; it does not indi cate whether the tuberculosis is active or Inactive. IN VETS' RETURN A large per cent of all battle casualties in the present conflict are psychological In nature, Lt: Com. Meyer Zellgs, USNR, psy chiatrist at the marine barracks, Klamath Falls, tqld approxi mate! 100 persons at a meeting sponsored by the committee for co-ordinating community aids to veterans in the county court house Friday night. Pointing out that battle con ditions impose stresses which never are faced In ordinary life. he declared no one la immune to the effects of battle, psycho logically,, and that lt Is Just a question of the Individual con stitution as to whether or how soon he will break under those stresses. .' . Of those suffering from, war neurosis, - Lt. Com. Zellgs said some recover in -a few days, if spotted early enough and given immediate rest, while others in whom the symptoms are more Intense, must be sent back to the United States for hospitalization and take anywhere from a few weeks to months to recover, Few Can Resume Fight In the latter instance, he as serted, it is unusual for the men to be sent back to combat again. as the danger of relapse is too great, but many of them re cover sufficiently to be able to perform non-combat duty. Of those who are discharged as unfit for military duty, he asserted, the great majority will fit into civilian life again, but allowances must be made while they are going through the period of re-adjustment, for that will take time Just as.it did to adjust from civilian to" military Hie. "The changes in them are not permanent .they are not fixed, the psychiatrist said, ."they are reversible." , - Immediate re-employment, to gether with development of an active interest in a hobby, are essential, he declared, in aiding recovery of such men, adding that nothing is more deteriorat ing or chronically invaliding than to allow men , suffering from war neurosis to- be idle.' In addition, employers, - mem bers of the man's family and other civilians must make an ef fort to understand and to make allowances for a while during the readlujtment period.' - No Blanket Rule There is no blanket rule to follow in dealing with returned veterans, Lt. Com. Zellgs said some will hot want to talk about their experiences and others will; talk of little else! but, in time, they will adjust to civilian life without too much difficulty nd their recovery will be en hanced if their condition-Is un derstood by civilians. The .family attitude,' too,- Is highly important, he- empha sized. If the family is under standing, the veteran's return to normal life will be much more rapid and successful. Chairman of the meeting was Mrs. Harry Holmes of the Red Cross, who described at length the processes set up through the various agencies such as the se lective service boards, federal employment service and vet eran's service organizations, for aiding the veteran in his return to civilian life.
