SIX MEDrORD MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, Jan. 15, 1845 Your Health and Its Care BY DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M. D. Readers should adcu-ase Inqulrta. toi Dt. William Brady 26S El Camlno. Beverly HUli. Calif, CHILDREN IN THEIR TEENS Probably because the practlo of giving infant a daily ration of vitamin D Is now almost uni- versal, there Is a prevalent be lief that cal cium deficien cy occur mainly in in fants. The pur pose of giving vitamin o is of course to pr o m o t e as similation and utilization of calcium. Probably be- nutritlonal de- Dr. Brady cause rickets, a flciency disease due to lack of sufficient calcium (and phos phorus) and vitamin D, is usual ly most manifest between the sixth and 18th months, a good many physicians still think it is all right for a child past a year or VA years of age to wor ry along without the daily ration of vitamin D, Fortunately a considerable number of children of pre-school and school age do get along very well without taking vitamin D at all if they happen to enjoy a reasonable amount of expos ure of skin to sunshine or sky- shine. The ultra-violet In sun light activates ergosterol in the skin, converting it into vitamin D. So the more clothing and the more time' spent indoors the greater the Individual's require ment for vitamin D. According to Spies and Butt (Diseases of Metabolism, Dun can, '42) "about 75 per cent of rickets escapes diagnosis" and this sad state of affairs Is due largely to tne faulty conception of rickets which some physicians have their diagnostic thresh old Is reached only by the square-headed, pot-bellied baby with delayed teething and walk ing and I, Brady, might add that these old time practitioners do far too much poll-parrot squawking about "the vitamin fad" to cover their diagnostic in competency. - Deficient assimilation and uti lization of phosphorus as well as calcium and vitamin D accounts for rickets. As phosphorus oc curs in most foods in combina tion with calcium, it is seldom necessary to be concerned about the phosphorus intake provided there is adequate calcium sup ply, assimilation and utilization. Rickets Is not merely a di sease, weakness, softness of bones, spine and teeth; it is di sease also of the ligaments, muscles, glands, teeth, digestive organs. In a great many Instances of pronated feet or weak ankles and potential flatfoot in grow ing children undiagnosed rickets h responsible. In many cases of spinal curvature, round shoul ders, fatigue posture in children in their 'teens undiagnosed rick ets is responsible. Few physicians diagnose rick ets in the mild degree it usually occurs-in growing children and youths. But never mind that. I say supplement the diet of every growing child with a suitaoie daily ration of calcium, phos phorus and vitamin u ana pre vent any and all of these mani festations of rickets. From what I have observed in the past 14 vears. I believe this practice in- mrp for these crowing children exceptionally good teeth, notab ly free from caries. Bahn Editor, The Film Dally New York "Going My Way," Paramount's box office sensa tion, written, directed and pro duced by Leo McCarey, with Blng Crosby starred and Rise Stevens and Barry Fitzgerald in prominent supporting roles, is rated 1944's number one feature release by American critics and reviewers for press and radio participating in the 23d ahnual Film Dally "Ten Best Pictures" poll. Four hundred twenty-eight ballots were cast for the Para mount picture in the coast-to-coast and bordcr-to-border con test, which saw the critics of 384 newspapers, magazines, wire services and syndicates and the film commentators of 95 radio stations participating. The total number of participants In the 23d poll was 479 before the polls closed. "Going My Way" finished with a 103-vote lead over its closest rival, 'The Song of Ber nadette," 20th Century . Fox's moving plcturlzation of Franz Werfcl's inspiring story. "The Song of Bernadette" was pro duced by William Perlberg and directed by Henry King. - The third "Ten Best" niche goes to "Since You Went Away," produced and written by David O. This adapta tion of John Steinbeck's story nad a cast topped by Tnllulah Bankhcad and William Bcndlx. Under the contest rules, only features released for exhibition between November 1, 1943, and ucumer 31, 1P44. were elleible. A total of 141 pictures were nominated by the producer-distributors for critic and commen tator consideration; the voters, however, wero not bound by the list and were premltted to cast ballots for any other feature which they desired, subject only to the specified 12-month period. Last year the companies nomi nated 120 features. It is estimated that the read ing and listening public of the participating presa and radio sta tions this year approximated the ba.uuu.uou mark. One hundred seventeen pic tures received one or more bal lots from the critics and com mentator in the 1944 poll. Last year the comparable figure was 103, while in 1942 the number was 134.
