Nov. 21 (U.R) Joe (The Eye) Tocco, reputed New York gangster arrested last August by federal authorities in the uncovering of a large inter national dope ring, today changed a plea of not guilty to guilty on a charge of possession of narcotics as his trial opened In federal court here. Tocco faces a possible maxi mum sentence of 10 years in the penitentiary and a $10,000 fine. Federal agents who arrest ed him on a train in Chicago said he had 700 ounces of nar cotics valued at $300,000 in his possession. Federal Judge Louis E. Good man denied a motion to allow Tocco to remain free on $25,000 bail and ordered him held for sentencing Saturday. Goodman then proceeded with the, trial of Salvadore (Sam) Maugeri, Santa Cruz, Calif., boardwalk concessionaire accus ed of supplying the narcotics to Tocco and operating his conces sion as a front for the ring smug gling opium from Mexico,, In World War" II, every 1,000 American combat soldiers are equipped with 23 army ordnance field artillery pieces, while ia World War I, the same number of men had only four field guns. '.' : ' Two years ago he began a courtship with a student nurse from North Dakota. From this association, a child was born five months ago. His third amour was with La- nell O'Leary, whom he met in Bremerton, Wash-., but who re cently -moved to Great Falls. Miss O'Leary also is expecting a child.
