' I began turning somersaults 34 years ago. I am now 74. "American Rifleman." official organ of the National Rifle asso ciation, in the November issue carries an article' entitled "Scrap-Made Pup" by Bren H. Starcher, route 1, in which he describes the making of a "pup" rifle. The article Is illustrated with picture of the gun and a sketch showing the operating of the remote trigger mechanism. Starcher,' who collects and re makes guns as a hobby, used, a Winchester model 78 Sporter .22 as a basis for the new gun and patterned the stock on the lines of the Mannllcher carbine. Parts for the gun, other than the ac tion and barrel, were hand-made from scrap metal of varied sources, hence the title, "Scrap Made Pup." The pup rifles differ from con ventional rifles in that the ac tions are built Into the butt of the stock about ten Inches to the rear of the normal position, thus shortening the total length of the gun The name, pup, for guns of this type is obscure as ' to origin, Starcher states. OI&BU WAS OVER PARTS OF El De Gaulle, Orders All Mem bers Of Patriotic Militia To Surrender Weapons ' By United Press A new wave of unrest swept through parts of France and Bel- glum today as members of the erstwhile fighting guerilla armies demonstrated angrily against de mobilization orders issued by their governments at the request of Allied military authorities. : Adding to the tentlon was a series of strongly - worded edi torials in the inspired Russian press condemning the demobili zaton orders as ill advised and likely to hamper the work 'of eliminating former Nazi collab orators from the liberated terri tories. ". Martial Law m In France, a virtual state of martial law was proclaimed In parts of the Haute-Havoie de partment -along the Franco-Swiss frontier, after a group ot armed men; purporting to be members of the French forces of the in terior, seized a number of po litical prisoners from jail , and shot them summarily. ' Gen. Charles De Gaulle's or dering of all members of the so-called "patriotic militia" to surrender their arms and register for service with the regular armed forces was commended by the authoritative London times as a measure likely to promote the restoration of law and or der in France. " Vichyites Active, The official communist .party party organ Pravda, however, charged that disarmamenut of the partisans "can only encour age Vichyites who, incidentally, have become more active lately. . Pravda also denounced ihe dis arming ' of Irregular patriot groups in Belgiitm, charging that the move there was inspired by Belgian Gen. Van Oversteten whom It attacked as an "active agent of Nazi Germany." "The fact that traitors like Van Oversteten . are at large while patriots are being dis armed is even stranger consider ing that the latter Js occurring In an area close to a front where severe fighting is expected and where it is especially important to render enemy agents harmless and unite all patriotic forces," Pravda said. An orderly crowd estimated at 4000, at least half of them be lieved to be communists and many of them armed, staged a 90-mlnute demonstration against the disarmament order in Brus sels yesterday, shouting for Pre mier Hubert Plerlot's dismissal.
