I BELIEVE IN BOAP AND WATER Strange as It may seem to the Wiseacres, I, Ol" Doc Brady, be lieve the people, all tne people, do not rnano nearly enough everyday use of soap and water as a cleansing, an tlseptic, disin fecting agent. Recently I q u o t ed here an o b s e rva tlon of Prof. Barnett Sure's (Tha Little Dr Brady Things In Life, ADnleton-Century, '37): "Relatively clean teeth may be extremely decayed, ana filthy mouths may contain sound teeth and healthy gums." Frankly, I do not understand what Prof. Sure means by filthy and Webster says filth is foul matter; anything that soils or defiles disgustingly; and filthy means defiled with filth, dis gustingly dirty, polluting. That's clear enough even for my dull comprehension, but I'd feel hap pier about It If Prof. Sure,- or any other Intelligent or compe tent person, would show me a "filthy" mouth containing sound teeth and healthy gums. I hon estly believe that would be as singular as a mouse's nest In the cat's ear. Still and all, I say we do not use enough soap and water In this country. Especially not enough soap. In a good many places where water, even run ning water, is provided there is a conspicuous absence of soap, whether In solid, liquid, or pow der form. Now soap costs money, while water is so cheap that almost any municipality, corporation or individual Is willing to provide it for washing the hands, or for drinking, that is, , for citizens, patrons or guests. Dazed and sobbing, their faces contorted with fear, they began streaming from the burning city by the hundreds. They must have been the same people who had cheered when they saw German movies of refugees fleeing before the conquering Wchrmacht In Poland, France and Greece. Today they were stunned and bewildered unable to compre hend how such a thing could happen within Hitler's Third Reich. With half the city destroyed and our troops methodically ad vancing in a battle through houses, attics, streets and sewers, the civilians called it quits in large numbers around 2:03 this afternoon. An hour and a half later upward of 3,000 had run the gauntlet of fire and smoke in the eastern section of Aachen to seek refuge behind our lines. Many emerged from a single air raid shelter three stories un derground where they had taken refuge against the deluge of American bombs and shells. As they trudged through the ruins, a good number displayed copies of the American ultimatum which had been dropped on Aachen demanding that the city be surrendered or destroyed. The civilians figured a copy of the ultimatum would serve as a safe conduct pass. by Portland, Ore., Oct. 14 (U.R) The agricultural relations ad visor for the OPA, T. H. Wil liamson of Washington, D. C, has admitted that the OPA "isn't through making mis takes," but he said that the per centage of errors made by the OPA will be reduced as a result of conferences of the type re cently held in Portland.
