TEH MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE Your Health and Its Care BY DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M. D. fUaders should oddren Inquiries toi Dr. William Brady 265 CI Camino. Beverly HUU. Calit. THE VINEGAR TOPER I have a habit of drinking vinegar (writes Mrs. L. J., who says she is 25 years old and weighs liu pounds which is probably 16 pounds too lit tle if she is ot average height f'i- for women of that age). I : drink about aj tablespoonful a day. After drinking it I have an idea I feel lots bet Or Brady ter. Will it hurt me? From frequent inquiries It would seem that the notion Is commonly prevalent that one who overeats can reduce by drinking some vinegar every day. As a condiment a few drops of vinegar on your cabbage or beans, if vou nrefcr it to lemon juice, is harmless, although it is well to remember that vinegar is practically dilute citric acid and citric acid is utilized in the body. Thereto-e citric acid may be regarded as food, and acetic acid, taken in excess of the few drops as condiment, may chenv icallv produce an injurious ct- feet" (Webster) and thus act as a noison. Pure acetic acid, officially called glacial acetic acid (glacial means resembling ice) Is a clear liquid with characteristic pung ent odor, sometimes used as a Cdustic for destroying warts, corns and the like. The correspondent taking her nip of vinegar daily, just be cause she likes It. proDBDiy win not shrivel up and waste awny nor become pickled, but, on the off chance that she may sun wish to keep her youthful good looks I suggest that she switch to leman juice, straight or di luted with water, or orange juice these are wholesome, healthful, good sources of vita mins A, D-co:nplex and C and Iwavi desirable In the dally diet (the fruit or its Juice) to pre serve" the acid-base balance in blod and tissues. So I say, instead of becoming a vinegar toper gratify that craving by taking a glass of tomato juice or lemon or grapefruit or orange - or other citrus fruit juice, or any com- j bination of these that suits your fancy. This will improve your health and vite and appearane. Vinegar will not. Let me remind you that I use vinegar as a condiment and I know no reason wny every ut should not do so. I like lemon inlco on salad greens, spinach, etc.. but for my baked beans and boiled cabbage I want vinegar. And if I were going to have sliced cowcumbcrs but, come now, let's keep our tempers you have vinegar on your cow cumbcrs If you like. I refrain from commenting upon your taste.
