PINKHAM'S tSSma By Hennen Hackott United Press Correspondent San Francisco (U.R) A $10, 000.000,000 system of nine super highways including mile-square airports at 18 intersections and with war veterans getting pre ferential hiring in building them is one of Maury Maverick's an swers to the problem of postwar re-employment. Maverick, vice-chairman of the War Production Board, chairman of the Smaller War Plants Corp. and former con gressman from San Antonio, Tex., made the proposal during a recent inspection tour of West Coast war plants. His plans, Maverick said, "will furnish constructive em ployment directly and indirect ly to 2,000,000 people. It will save the west and strengthen our nation's economy. It will join to gether all parts of the nation and be of tremendous strategic mili tary value." Cross-Country Routes Under the WPB official's pro posal the highway system would comprise three transcontinental routes and six north-south arter ies. Each road would be divided with three lanes of traffic in each direction. They would go direct ly through major cities on their routes with a system of spurs linking the super-highways with the cities traffic. "A minimum of one airport at least one mile square would be located at or adjacent to each of the 18 intersections of such highways, one with the other,' Maverick said. "There shall be a stipulation In each building contract that the contractor shall employ first veterans and second, unemploy ed men between the ages of 50 and 60 of the region in which his unit of the highway is built. This will mean constructive honest employment for many re turning soldiers, who will be among the best workers possible. Proposed Routes The transcontinental highways would: 1. Originate in southern Cali fornia running east to Savannah, Ga., via El Paso, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and Mobile. 2. Run from San Francisco to Newark, N. J., via Yosemite na tional park, Duckwater, Nev.; Huntington. Utah; Denver; Phil- lipsburg. Mo.: Springfield, 111.; Indianapolis; Wheeling, W. Va.; Uniontown, Pa., and Cumber land. Md. 3. Originate in two roads from Seattle and Portland to Salem. Ore., and run to Albany, N. Y., and Boston, via Yellowstone na tional park; Rapid City, S. D.; Chicago and Cleveland. Westernmost of the north south arteries would link Mexico and the Alcan highway via San Diego, Los Angeles. San Fran cisco, Portland, Seattle and British Columbia. Two other of the north-south trunks would have Mexican con nections and run from Texas to the Canadian border. One would start at El Paso and run through El Morro national monument in New Mexico ' and Salt Lake City. The other would have its origin near San Antonio and go north through Hobart, Okla., Ness City, Kan.; Broken Bow, Neb.; Pierre, S. D., and Bis marck, N. D. To Canada Another would parallel parts of the Mississippi-Missouri river system runing from Baton Rouge to Canada via Jackson. Miss.; Memphis; Chicago and Milwau kee. A road from Pensacola, Fla., to Buffalo would traverse Atlan ta, Jonesboro, Tenn.; Charles town, W. Va and Pittsburgh. Similar in strategic impor tance to the San Diego-Alcan highway, Maverick said, would be a road paralleling U. S. route 1 from near Miami to the Cana dian bordrr above Concord. N. H., via St. Petersburg, Fla., Reidsville, Ga.; Columbia; Raleigh; Richmond; a point be tween Baltimore and Washing ton; New Burnswick, N. J.; Springfield, Mass., and Concord. He said German planes drop ped Colorado beetles in an ef fort to damage the 7,000,000 ton British potato crop.
