In that it purports to be and is represented as Apple Butter, a food for which a defi nition and standard of identity has been prescribed by regula tions promulgated pursuant to Section 341. POOR CIRCULATION Statistics of one of the large life insurance companies reports that coronary heart disease has apparently in creased and Is still Increasing this having been given as the cause of death in 4.7 per h u n drcd t h ousand claims paid in 1930, in 24.9 per hundred t h o usand claims paid in Of Brad? 1935. Whether such statistics or any statistics show that coron ary or other forms of heart dis ease are actually on the in crease I don't know. Some med ical authorities seem to believe there is more heart disease now than there was twenty, fifty or a hundred years ago. That a good many laymen harbor the same belief Is impressed upon mo by letters from laymen. It Is the conviction of these am bitious but untrained (that is, untrained in the science of Path ology) experts that the alarm ing Increase in heart disease. as they see It, is clearly due to ! smoking, drinking, coffee, eat-: Ing meat or too much meat, or even to much starchy food which, In their fancy, causes "gas", and the "gas" of course "presses on the heart" and there you are. Actually there Is no reason to imagine that any of these causes, excepting smoking, may contribute to heart disease. In regard to smoking, it is the consensus of medical opinion, as nearly as I can determine, that it does cause heart disease. especially coronary occlusion (narrowing, constriction of stop page of a branch of the coron ary artery. Efficiency of the circulation depends not alone on the con dition of the heart, but also upon the state of the conduits or blood flows. It depends on the state of the large and small arteries which one can feel and see but even more, perhaps, on the state of the smallest ter minal tubes, called arterioles, which are visible only under the microscope and I don't mean "capillaries", for nobory can see or has seen a capillury. The effects of drugs on the circulation are largely brought about in the same way. The caliber or diameter of the arterioles is changeable, be ing under the control of the portion of the autonomic, auto matic or unconscious (independ ent of the will) sympathetic nervous system called vasomot or nerves. Besides drugs, vari ous other things influence the circulation through the vassamo tor nerves, such as toxins, duct less gland hormones (notable adrenin), and emotions the emotions acting by producing increased or decreased secretion of adrenin.
