V LOCAL and Bete Home Clarence Betz has arrived in Phoenix to spend two weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Betz. He has been serving with the army in Australia and New Guinea. Car Recovered A 1941 Chev rolet coupe owned by John R. Burdell of Route 4, which was stolen from in front of 30 North Riverside avenue Sunday after noon, was recovered a short time later by state police. It had been abandoned. To Hold Sale The Graduate Nurses association, District Four, will hold a rummage sale August 11 and 12, in the Ma- sonic building, Main and Holly ' streets. Return Mrs.' Harvey Nich ols, Mrs. Thelma Willarding and Lorry Willarding have re ' turned to Mcdford after spend ing two weeks at Muroc, Calif., visiting Mrs. Nichol's son, Cpl. Wendall Sipes. They were ac companied to Medford by Mrs. Sipes, who will spend a few days here and then go on to Spokane, Wash., where Cpl. Sipes has been transferred. ' ' Clave Graduated Included in the class of aerial gunners graduated last week from the AAF training command aerial gunnery school at Harlingen army air field, Tex., was Cpl. Louis J. Clave, son of Mrs. Annie Clave of Eagle Point, ac cording to an announcement re ceived here. At brief graduation exercises at the field, he re ceived a pair of gunner's wings as well as a promotion in grade. I Powell Promoted Assigned to work with the army transpor tation corps, Gynell Powell of Medford has just been boosted from private first class to cor poral at the Seattle Port of Em barkation, according to an an nouncement received here. Cpl. I Gynell, who joined the WAC in July of 1943, graduated from the University of Oregon in 1941 with a B.S. degree. Prior to her enlistment she was employed by I the Rogue River National Forest at Medford. A brother, Sgt. Her ' bert Botts, is serving in the in I fantry as a paratrooper. Younger of 611 Eighth street has received, news of the birth of a son to Capt. and Mrs. Robert McBrlde in Monterey, Calif. Mrs. Mc Bride is the former Margaret Younger. Capt. McBride Is over seas with a hospital unit. The McBrides have one daughter, Helen, two years of age. At Scott Field Pfc. Ted E. Marshall, son of Capt. and Mrs. U. B. Marshall of Hobbs, N. Mex., arrived at Scott Field, 111., radio school of the army air forces training command, where he has been enrolled in the radio-operator-mechanics course according to an announcement from the field. A graduate of Medford high school, Marshall attended the University of Ore gon before entering the service. Miss Winn Home Miss Ruth Winn spent the week-end in Medford with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Winn, 1004 East Jackson Boulevard. Miss Winn is stationed at Camp Beat, near Marysville, Calif., with the American Red Cross. She was accompanied south last night by Mrs. Lillian Hanna of San Gabriel, Calif., who for the past several days has been a guest in Medford of the Wions and of Mrs. , James Daily, 808 Bennett street. Plan Colorado Picnic Sun day, August 13, has been set the date of the annual picnic and meeting of the Jackson County Colorado association, according to an announcement today by Mrs. J. F. Waybrant of Medford, president of the association. The picnic will be in Lithia Park, Ashland, at one o'clock and will be followed by a program and speaker. Those attending should bring a picnic lunch and table service. Coffee will be furnished by the committee. Anyone for merly residing in the state of Colorado is cordially invited to attend the picnic and meeting. Election of officers will be held. BEVERLY JACKSON OF EAGLE POINT PASSES Beverly Jean Jackson, Ea"gle Point, passed away this morning in a local hospital. The body is at the Perl Funeral Home, await ing funeral arrangements which will be announced later. Mrs. Jackson's husband is Pvt. Wayne Jackson of Camp Wol ters, Texas. Many schools now use photo electric tubes to control illumina tion in accordance with the de gree of natural daylight available. FLOYD V, BELL OF DIES OF E Floyd V. Bell, a native of southern Oregon, passed away suddenly Sunday morning. While working on his farm in the North Phoenix district his team ran away. Apparently, in running after them, the exertion was too much and he died en route to the hospital. He was born in Talent, March 5, 1897, and had spent almost his entire life in this Community. , On June 4, 1922 he was united I in marriage to Ada jobe at; Phoenix. In April, 1927 he be-! came a member of the Phoenix ' Grange and was a very active member. He also belonged to the county, state and national Grange and was a director of the Grange Co-op. He was a member of the armed forces in World War I. Besides his wife, Mrs. Ada Bell, he leaves three children, Darrell A. Bell, Phoenix; Thom as M. Bell, at home; Mrs. Doris Reeder, Medford, and a grand son, Donald Reeder. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Bell, Talent, also sur vive. Services will be In the Conger-Morris chapel at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. L. H. Mitchelmore officiating. Inter ment will be in Phoenix ceme tery. MRS. BERTHA CANNADY FUNERAL WEDNESDAY Mrs. Bertha Z. Cannady, 51. wife of Robert Cannady, passed away in a local hospital Friday Her passing was unexpected, she had made her home in Gold Hill for the past four years. ' She also leaves two sons, I Claude E. and Merle E., U. S. navy, three grandchildren and two sisters in the cast. Services will be in the Conger-Morris chapel at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. L. C. Kirby officiating. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park. JOHN PATRICK FUNERAL TO BE HELD IN MEDFORD John Patrick, a resident of this community for many years, passed away in Bend Sunday. Services will be in the Conger- j Morris chapel at 2:30 p. m. Frost officiating. Interment will will be in I.O.O.F. cemetery. A complete obituary will be pub lished later. NOVELIST DIES London, Aug. 7. (U.R) John Leslie Palmer, novelist and dra matic critic died in a hospitnl at Hampstead Saturday night, it was announced today. He served I with the secretariat of the I League of Nations for 18 years. Uss Mall Tribune Want Aria America Firster Would Give Negro Haven in Africa Detroit, Aug. 7 U.R Gerald L. K. Smith, organizer of the America First party, said today I that he would present a plank favoring a homeland in Africa for American negroes to the party's convention here, Aug. 29-30. "We should compel the French and British to release 1,000,000 square miles In Africa, "to ap ply to their war indebtedness to the United States," he said. "This land would then be made available to American negroes free, where they could be com pletely supreme, free from white man rule and domina tion." The plank. Smith said, will stiuplnte that no negro need be compelled to migrate, "but in ducements and opportunities should be made so attractively available that millions of ne groes would seek to establish themselves in a land where they would be supreme." (U.R) The Northrop Black Wid ow P-61, the first warplane de signed especially for night fight ing, "is capable of shooting down anything that flies" the war department said today re vealing hitherto secret features of t'-.e plane. The Widow packs a wallop In Ihe form of 20 mm. cannon and .50 caliber machincgun arma ment. It is the largest existing pursuit plane as large as a me dium bomber and at the same time, the war department said, is as swift as a fast pursuit. The plane carries armor bul let-resistant glass and deflector plates to protect her crews and ammunition boxes from .30 and .50 caliber enemy machine-gun fire. Seizures Curtail Black Mart Booze Washington, Aug. 7. (U.R) Treasury agents seized $700,000 worth of black market liquor during the eight months ended last June in a nationwide drive that has greatly curbed illegal sales at above celling prices, the treasury's alcohol tax unit said today. Reporting an increase In "moonshining" during the first half of this year, the unit said that it had referred to U. S. at torneys for criminal prosecution 548 black market cases involv ing 1,174 persons. Indictments were returned against 485 per sons and court convictions ob tained against 175. BOYS PROWL CABINS IN OUTLYING AREAS Boys in a few of the small towns of the valley are entering outlying cabins without permis sion of the owners, and In this city are writing obscenities on walls, according to the district attorney's office. Some of the writing is too high up to have been penned by a boy, but by a person who had gained his full height. The cabins pilferers take few articles, and are evidently look ing for money or something to eat. In the Jacksonville district owners of cabins have frighten ed the boys away several times the past two weeks. DEWITT TO COMPLETE MISSION OF McNAIR Washington, Aug 7 U.R) Lt. Gen. John L. Dewitt, former commanding general of the Fourth army "and the Western Defense Command, has been named to complete the undis closed assignment that Lt. Gen. Lesley J. MrNair was carrying out when he was killed by an American bomb in Normandy. The war department gave no details in announcing the ap pointment, saying merely that "Lt. Gen. John L.
