Y., Aug. 1 (U.R) Manuel Luis Quezon, 65 first president of the Philippine Common .vealth, died at 10:05 a. m. today as his associates were planning a celebration for his birthday two weeks hence, 111 for the past several years from tuberculosis and heart dis ease, the frail little chief execu tive of the Philippines neverthe less had rallied sufficiently from a recent relapse at this spa to encourage his friends and asso ciates to plan a party for his 66th birtday on August 19. General Valdez, Quezon's per sonal physician, said Quezon's death at this time was unexpect ed, since he "had been improv ing very well, especially during the last two weeks. Donald F. Helm of Jacksonville Wins Promotion .... 217.32 33.91 A XX Bomber Command Base, Somewhere in India Pro motion of Cpl. Donald F. Helm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Helm of Jacksonville, Ore., to sergeant has been announced by the headquarters of the squadron of the XX bomber command with which he is serving some where in India. Sergeant Helm, a graduate of the Southwick high school, Southwick, Idaho, in 1941, is an airplane mechanic in a B-29 maintenance detachment. While in high school he participated in basketball, baseball and football. (U.R) A pair of 'teen-agers armed with a sawed-off shotgun re leased a pair of prisoners from the city jail today, locked the desk sergeant in the cell, and escaped. The youths, described as be ing less than 18 years old, freed Robert C. Ham, 18, held on sus picion of burglary, and his cell mate, Jack Carr, 21, held on sus picion of grand theft. One of the youths covered Sgt. Fred Spurgeon with the abbre viated weapon, the other took his keys and released the prison ers, meantime herding the ser geant into the cell. Find Wreckage of Training Planes Luke Field, Ariz., Aug. 1 (U.R) Army patrols moved thru the rugged Tower mountains to day in search of 2nd Lt. James M. Akridge, 19, who had been thought dead with three com panions of a training flight which came to disaster four months ago. Uncertainty as to the fate of Lt. Akridge was raised by the finding of the burned-out wreck age of three training planes 6000 feet up the sheer side of a moun tain side. There were three bod ies only and only the remnants of three unopened parachutes and no clue whatever to the fate of the fourth man Akridgt who was riding in one of the planes as a passenger.
