Newspaper Page Textr LOCAL and - Council Mooting City coun cil will meet this evening at 7:30 o'clock in the mayor's office in city hall. Only routine business is on the agenda. In Portland Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Ingling, county court house, left this morning for Portland to spend several days on business. Mr. Ingling is the county Jailer. Visiting Here Mrs. F. W. Bartlett of Yreka arrived in Medford yesterday afternoon to visit Mrs. Maybelle Bechtel of 147 North Holly street for an indefinite time. Sergeant Here Staff Sgt. Orville Burnette is in Medford to spend a 15-day furlough with ' his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burnette, 425 NortH Holly street. He is stationed at Camp Cook, Calif. Lt. Ryan Visitor First Lt. D. 4 H. Ryan, on the air corps in structing staff at Roswell, N. M., field, is enjoying a visit with his brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Ryan, on their Table Rock ranch. Chapter 'to Meet Reames chapter, O.E.S., will hold the stated communication Thursday, June 8, in the Medford Masonic temple at 8 p. m. There will be initiation and refreshments. Vis itors are welcome. ' Change Meeting Medford Lady Lions will meet this eve ning at Ehrheart's cafe at 7:30 o'clock instead of at the home of Mrs. L. C. Coyle, as previously announced. The meeting will be preceded by the serving of des sert. Gaili Leaving Mrs. Budd Gail and two sons of, 300 Mae street left this morning for Sac ramento, Calif., to spend an in definite time. Mrs. Gail's hus band, Pvt. Gail, is stationed at Camp Kohler with the signal corps. En route south Mrs. Gail will stop in Redding to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Pennington. Graduates Lloyd G. Lyman graduated May 31 from the U. S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen's school, located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, and was commissioned an ensign in the naval reserve, according to a release from the school. Ensign Lyman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Lyman, ' 1504 West Main street. Wright Here Newell L. Wright, Portland, timber man agement specialist with the Port land office of the regional for ester, national forest service, is in Jackson county this week. Mr. Wright, with Karl Janouch, superintendent, and F. G. Whit ney, assistant, are making tim ber sale Inspections in the Union Creek district of the Rogue River forest. . On Leave Douglas Finch, chief electrician in the navy Sea bees, and his wife arrived yester day on a 10-day leave from Port Hueneme, Calif., to visit with local friends and relatives. Finch was in Rhode Island until a few weeks ago when he was trans ferred to the California base, and Mrs. Finch joined him there. l They are staying with Mrs. Joe Rostelle at 128 S. Holly street. Temple to Meet Zulelma Temple, Daughters of the Nile, will hold a picnic followed by the regular meeting in Ashland next Saturday. The picnic will be at 12 noon in Lithia park and the meeting is scheduled for 2 p. m. at the Masonic hall. Mem bers attending the affair are asked to bring one picnic dish or menu item for the lunch, and the committee in charge will provide coffee and rolls. Baker Leaving Jack Baker 1944 graduate of Medford high school and winner of the Bill Gates football award this year, is leaving tonight by train to re port to Portland for induction into the navy- Having previously qualified for radio and radar training, Baker will enter the navy as a seaman second class, and will leave Portland tomor row for Great Lakes. 111., for .boot camp training. After that, -he is scheduled to receive nine months' training in 'radio and radar, completing the course with the rating of second class petty officer. Mrs. Beesley will return to San Fran cisco, where she is making her home for the present, after con cluding her stay here. Lowry Here Burton Lowry, Jr., supervisor In the Albina sea man engineering works in Port land, is in the valley this week to supervise thinning of his two peach orchards. He is staying with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burton Lowry, Sr., at the Bear Creek Orchards. Lowry's wife and two daughters remained at their home in Portland. Seabe Here Harold Suther land, petty officer in the Navy Seabees, and Mrs. Sutherland ar rived in Medford on a 15-day leave and are visiting his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Suther land of Phoenix. Sutherland has just completed seven months' training at Camp Perry, Va. On completion of his leave, he will report to Camp Thomas, R. I., an embarkation camp. Boys Who Fought Will Have Honor Of Running Rome Rome, June 6 (U.R) The honor of garrisoning Rome will go to the doughboys who have seen heavy combat throughout the Italian campaign, it was an nounced today. Maj. Gen. Harry Johnson who heads the Rome area com mand said he felt that only fighting men deserved the privilege and restful assign ment of keeping order In Rome. One combat unit posted signs on the outskirts of Rome which said: "Off limits for all PBS per sonnel." PBS stands for "peninsular base section" units which have been stationed at the base and, in comparison to the men who have been fighting throughout the campaign, liv ing the life of Riley. SGT. YORK SEES FINISH OF NAZIS IN 60 DAYS Jamestown, Tenn., June 8 OJ.R) Sgt. Alvin C. York, "one man army" of World War I fame who says he's Just itching to take another crack at the Ger mans, today gave Hitler and his gang Just 60 days to stay in the war now that the invasion has started. "Mr. Hitler and his butcher boys can start thinking about 'Hara-Klrl' or some other quick powder out of the mess they started for the end is in sight for them," he said. ! DON FIELD An army Air Medal was awarded posthumously to Lt. Don Field, Medford fighter pilot who perished in the North Af rican campaign during a battle April S, 1943, last night. Pres entation of the medal was made to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Field, by Capt. O. M. Smith of the Medford airbase at the Field home, 610 South Oakdale, with only members of the family present for the cere mony. The citation made with the award, received from Brig. Gen. Edward F. Witsell, reads: "For meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight during the period of Feb. 14, 1943, to April 5, 1943. Due to his extraordinary skill as a navi gator, Lt. Field participated as formation leader on two occa sions on the long water non-stop flight from England to North Africa,, before being assigned to an operational squadron. On his second combat mission, April 5, 1943, Lt. Field participated with his squadron In a fierce battle with enemy aircraft over the From this engagement, during which his squadron de stroyed 18 enemy aircraft, Lt. Field is missing. By his skill as a navigator and courage and coolness as a pilot, Lt. Field has reflected great credit upon him self and upon the armed forces or the United States." Lt. Field's Purple Heart medal had previously been sent to his parents, accompanied by a letter of sympathy from Henry L. Stimson, then secretary of war. Additional information re ceived by the Fields concerning the last flight of their son is to the effect that in addition to the 18 aricraft referred to in the citation, which were German troop transports, the American airmen destroyed 13 fighter planes during the same battle. Army heads later referred to this air engagement as one of the crucial air battles of the North African campaign. Lt. Field's plane, a P-38, was re ported to have been downed 20 miles off shore over the Medi terranean sea. Lt. Field graduated from Med ford senior high school, took air cadet training at the Southern Oregon College of Education and was a student at Oregon State college when he went into the air corps. Butte Falls Boy Gains Promotion In 9th Air Force A Ninth Air Force Bomber Base, England The promotion of Freeman Haynes, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murl F. Haynes RFD 1, Eagle Creek, Ore., to the rank of technician, fifth grade, has been announced by the head quarters of this A-20 light bom bardment base in England. A former forest ranger, Cpl. Haynes, Is now assigned to this station's fire-fighting platoon. He entered the U. S. army on July 8, 1943. Cpl. Haynes attended Butte Falls high school in Jackson county, Ore., where he was ac tive in all types of physical training, including basketball. He has one brother in the navy and a grandfather who was a colonel in the Civil War. AFL Union Official Held In Peculation New York, June 6 (U.R) Edgar L. Keenan, 50, an official of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks (AFL), surrendered at the district at torney's office today after his In dictment by a New York county grand Jury on a charge of em bezzling $2,534 from the union, including about $1,600 which the members had set aside for the Red Cross. Keenan, the indictment charg ed, misappropriated the union funds by making false entries In the organization's accounts be tween May, 1941, and June, 1942. Although it has been Inter preted to mean Day of Des tiny, Day of Destruction, Date Day, Day of Deliverance, and others, the D merely is a sym bol selected by military lead ers for the day of invasion. To military men, the use of the term "D-Day" is a con venient way for them to dedi cate specific troops and sup plies for a planned operation. It is the designated day for ac tion without revealing to the enemy the all important actual time for launching the attack. A crew of 18 and 17-year-old youths recruited in Portland, Seattle and other sections of the northwest left Medford today to work in the blister rust control project of the Rogue River For est service. Forty-three were sent out in the first group and additional groups scheduled for Wednesday and Friday will bring the total crew up to 100. The blister rust control camp will be set up in the Union Creek area and will have Charles King as foreman. It was said that the crews are recruited in other sections of the northwest in order not to deplete the local labor supply. Control crews for the blister rust, disease which attacks white pine forests, are used each sum mer on the Rogue River forest. Latest Quads Well England Reports Lewisham, England, June r) (U.R) England's fifth set of quad ruplets within a year, born Sat urday night to Aircraftsman K. Robinson and his wife, Edith, were reported "prospering" to day in a specially heated room at Lewisham hospital. The couple had wanted a girl. They got three of them and a boy. Three of the babies weighed slightly under three pounds and the fourth under two pounds. Mrs. Robinson, 32, was re ported "well." JACKIE COOGAN HOME FROM GLIDER SERVICE Washington, June 6. (U.R) The kid came back today, no longer a kid, but a genuine, bronzed, husky-looking and practically bald hero. Now nearly 30, Flight Officer John L. Coogan, who will al ways be "Jackie" to millions of Americans who remember his youthful movie roles, told at a press conference how he flew British chlndit troops into Bur ma by glider last March in the first operation of its kind against the Japanese.
