Candidacy of Harris Ellsworth, Roseburg editor, for congress on the republican ticket was purred throughout the new 4th district this week after organiza tion of a GOP congressional com mittee and a campaign keynote by Ellsworth which gave his views on local and war prob lems. ' Claude M. Hurd, Medford, was named chairman of the 4th district congressional committee; Miss Jeanette Calkins, Eugene, vice chairman, and Leon M. Mc Clintock, Roseburg, treasurer. The Roseburg organization meeting, called by Republican State Chairman Niel Allen, Grants Pass, was addressed by party leaders and other candi dates. Away with pipe railings where we can use timbers! Away with mesh fences where we can use boards! , Oar sole object in telling yon about our luck in producing scran is to suggest subtly that if you adopt our scheme of giving up everything not obvi ously essential you, too, may be able to increase your scrap yield four-fold. Ellsworth pointed out that the district contains more than one half of all the Douglas fir in the United States, and that he Is thoroughly familiar with log ging, lumbering and federal for est policies. Coos county coal should be made available to the people, he said, and leadership is needed to obtain development of nickel, chrome, copper, gold, cinnabar and water power. "Our district must develop and grow great as all other parts of our great country have devel oped in the American way and under tree competitive enter prise," said Ellsworth. I shall always oppose, as I always have opposed, govern ment' dictatorship over our in dustries and our very lives. I tnink the people who are served have a right to decide in the matter of power, for example, who shall serve them." War Support Pledged Declaring that there is but one great compelling issue now be- lore the American people, Ells worth promised, If elected, "to cooperate avith the president of the United States in the war ef fort . . . there should be no par tisanship in the war effort." He charged New Deal con gressmen with being "more con cerned with winning the forth coming election than with win ning the war. Everyone knows that vital legislation is shelved until 'after the election.' " Ellsworth said he believed in a sound and intelligent national old-age benefit program; a fair deal for all labor; a policy of production as opposed to a pol icy of scarcity. L PLAY HOST TO GEN. COWGILL Cavalry Troop G, Oregon State Guard, with headquarters here, will entertain Brigadier General Ralph Cowgill, com mander of the Oregon State Guard,' at a dinner at the Jack son Hotel tonight at 7:15 o'clock. General Cowgill succeeds the late General George A. White, former commander of the Ore gon State Guard, after whom Camp White has been named. The State Guard was organ ized after the Oregon National Guard was called to active duty and now has infantry and caval ry troops in all counties through out the state. General Cowgill and his wife are traveling with Mrs. White, widow of the late General White, and attended the dedi cation ceremonies at Camp White Tuesday.
