It would have been a club too, until the right time came. They offered Mrs. Clarke two hundred and fifty thousand. I of fered the same but I couldn't pay more than twenty-five thousand in cash. She knew she would get the balance within a year or two. but she hated me and she refused my offer. Then I had a stroke of good luck. I had suspected all along that there had been some previous affiliation between her and Perrv Clarke, but it was not until the day before she sailed that 1 learned anyining aenmie. "I had come to see her to make final plea. I walked down the hall unannounced. They were talking in the patio and I heard him sav that unless she paid over one hundred thousand dollars he'd see to it that she got nothing at all. He mentioned something about being able to Drove it. and Mrs. Clarke said she couldn't do anything about it until she had returned to the States I heard that much before a servant ap peared and they stopped talk ing. Raeburn picked up two of the photographic prints and began to roll them with one hand. "I went to Clarke the dav after Mrs. Clarke sailed. At first he would admit nothing. Joyce sat up and got her feet under her: then Raeburn was gone and Fenner was moving towards the door in quick long steps, his hand sliding inside his coat. Joyce ran across the room, meeting the detective at the door. "No, Jack!" "Look out," he said, not even looking at her. "You mustn't" She struggled to stay in front of the door and felt herself being thrust aside. "He can't get away with it" "But he didn't do It!" This time Fenner looked at her His eyes were still narrowed, still suspicious, but he dropped his hand and stood back. He was there. You saw him come out. "Yes, Joyce said. This narrow-gauge rsad offers one of the most thrill ing rides through mountain country in the United States and it is one of the two daily narrow gauge passenger operations left in the nation and it is ten years ago the operators of tha com ( pany decided to use "rail autos" to supplement the locomotive service.
